Diarrhea and Uncontrolled Urinating

Hi guys we are in dire need of some help. As of early yesterday morning Bo has had diarrhea and uncontrolled urination. The only changes have been to his food, which we changed almost a week ago. We changed from Life's Abundance to Purina Puppy Chow. We made sure we mixed the two together until he was getting more of the Puppy Chow. He seemed fine...no vomiting, diarrhea or anything. This past Thur. we took him to stay at a kennel while we went out of town for 4 days. The night we picked him up is when the diarrhea and urinating started. It's so bad that he can't even make it outside to pee! We're getting a little worried and wondering if the people at the kennel gave him another kind of food. The bag of Puppy Chow we left with them didn't even seem to be used! It was a new bag and it still had about the same amount of food in it as when we left it with them. Have any of your doodles experienced this? What could it be? We're thinking of taking him to the vet tomorrow but I wanted to post here first to get some suggestions. I'm really worried about him...thanks.

Daniece...I would take Bo to the vet in the morning. He could have picked up some kind of infection or virus at the kennel.  I don't know how old he is but I would be concerned about dehydration. It's best to be safe than sorry.

Also, as to Purina Puppy Chow.....there are many healthier choices out the for your pup. A suggestion would be to join the Food Group and look at the list of recommended dog foods. There is a wealth of information there.

I would take a urine sample to your vet to be sure he doesn't have an infection.  The diarrhea and peeing don't sound related, but ya never know!  Any change in his drinking habits?  Neither Life's Abundance or Purina is considered a high quality food--there are some issues with both even though LA is probably more expensive.  Do visit The Food Group on this site to get a list of recommended foods and learn more about why some foods are considered high or low quality.

I agree with everything Carla has said from vet to food..... I also would try and give him some ice, so he does not dehydrate.   I may not force water as he may drink too much and throw it back up.  Try the ice and if he doesn't eat it, maybe try and make it a chase game... slide the cube across the floor a bit and make him 'chase' (but not too actively) it and crunch on it.  Has he eaten?  I wouldn't force food on him that may make it worse. And NO treats.   If he does vomit very often, I would take him to the ER if you have one near you.  If he's stable and not vomiting or having diarehea, I would wait and take him first thing in the morning.  Poor guy.  I know how you feel!  HOpe you get some sleep tonight!

First, you will find I'm sure by the responses that come in that Puppy Chow is not a very good food.  My puppy Bexter was on Puppy Chow from the breeder so I kept him on that at first, but started switching over (after reading & learning on DK) to a new food (Natural Balance).  I would look at DK's food group.  There is a list of recommended quality food.  There is a range of prices with those foods, but I would switch him to a higher quality food because even if you have to pay a little more, you will probably save money in the long run on vet bills.

Next, about the urinating... I would check with the vet & see if he got a urinary tract infection at the kennel.  That's what it sounds like to me.  Can you tell if there is any blood?  Poor little guy.  Keep us posted with what the vet says.  I hope he gets better really soon!

HI Daniece.  I agree.  Take him to the vet in the am with urine and stool samples.  Ice cubes for small amounts of fluid at at a time and hold off food for the night to give his belly a rest.  Sending you hugs and let us know how Bo is doing.

Take him to the Vet!  It's better to be safe than sorry and I agree with Traci, he probably picked up a urinary track infection at the kennel.  He's going to need fluids. I would definitely try the ice or maybe a small syringe of water (the plastic kind they put in infant motrin), I used that when my daughter had rotovirus, it doesn't have a sharp end so you just put it in the back corner of his mouth and slowly squirt.  It only holds 2 tblsp at a time.   Good Luck and please post to let us know how he does..  Hugs Bo! and for you too Daniece!
