Fixes....

Don't let your dog out in the yard unsupervised.  If you can't redirect or correct the behavior, the dog is not going to stop on his own.  Digging is fun!  Put you dog on leash to potty and otherwise keep him in the house with you.

I've heard that dogs don't like to dig in their own poo, so that filling the holes with their waste will keep them from continuing to dig in the same hole.  Doesn't stop them from digging a new hole.

You can trim/cut the nails very short.  I like to use a dremel.  If the nails are dremeled all the way back to the quick, the dog is less inclined to want to dig.

putting his poop in the hole and then covering it works like a charm for our maddie.  a good way to get rid of the poop also.  good luck.
Just a thought...
Do you think that Harvey thinks he is helping, or doing a/his job by doing gardening as well? My husband and I have noticed that Winston will "mimic" work when we make dinner every night as well as helping pull weeds and helping w/laundry. Maybe I'm just wishful thinking, but when we give him a "project with praise" (toy) when we are busy, he seems to do better:-) Hope your summer gets better.
I used the poop-in-the-hole trick with Sadie, combined with telling her "leave it!" when she started to dig a new hole. I also let her dig all she wants at the dog park, and she seems to have grasped the idea that digging in the yard is not allowed, but digging in the park is OK. But I also never leave her in the yard unsupervised, nor do I plan to--my house has a one-bedroom apartment attached and so I share the yard with my neighbor.
