Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hey everyone.. i have a 7 month old Goldendoodle.. he is about 65 pounds now and is very wild..he jumps on everyone.. counter surfs.. and is VERY mouthy still!! i am contemplating getting an electric collar..set on VERY low just for in the house use.. when he is jumping up on people and nipping and things of that nature.. he goes to puppy classes has a trainer and gets several walks a day. this behavior is just not acceptable, as i cannot even have friends over the house. if i ever have a child he cannot be nipping and jumping like he is now.. he is in a teenage bratty stage i guess and is refusing to listen to me. anyways has anyone tried one of these collars? if so how did it work.. which did u use? and when will this behavior stop?? at what age?? thanks again

i would try a citronella collar first
I would never use a electric collar on my dog. There must be a better way to train your Golden than use a electric collar.
We use an electric collar on Hurley. Per his trainer we put it on in the morning and do not take it off until time for bed. Also, she said that anytime you must tell your dog 'no' we need to reinforce with the e-collar remote. So far the times we have used it have been effective. We have the Tri-Tronics Classic 70 G3. I must confess it is not easy for me to push that button even though he doesn't feel much when you consider the hair and muscle in his neck. If you get one be sure the collar is tight or your pup won't feel much.
I use an e-collar with Jacki, my 11 month old labradoodle. She had many of the same behavioral problems you are describing. I started using it when Jacki was about 8 months old and I have no regrets. I use it on low power in the house. When I am outside I do have to turn it up to get her attention because there is so much more going on outside. Her behavior changed overnight and that is no exaggeration. My trainer is from a company called "Sit Means Sit" and the collar was part of her fee. She spent 3 hours with us the first night and Jacki was like a different dog! I still put the collar on her everyday but it isn't all that often that I actually have to "zap" her. There was a time when I regretted getting a dog and now I love her to pieces :)
i thank you very much for ur comment and info.. i appreciate u being nice and not attacking me for thinking about using an e collar like many others on here... i love my dog to pieces..but there comes a time where the training i have been doing "positive reinforcement." "yes" and treating has stopped working.. i understand he is a puppy..but i have had 4 other dogs in my life and this behavior was never an issue with the others.. i had a mini poodle..toy poodle standard poodle and a lhasa.. i would never want to hurt Midas, and i dont even know that i WILL be able to press tht button..but at this point i am desperate..and i think me using an e collar is in the long run in his best interest.. because if he EVER jumps on my stove while i am cooking he is going to hurt himself.. and if i ever have a baby this behavior could really hurt someone.. people always ask if they can pet him and i am leary that he will get excited and start nipping them.. i am going to have my trainer come and assist us while using the collar.. and i will be using the lowest power as well... there was and sometimes is a time i regret getting a dog.. but i love him to pieces i jsut wish he would behave better... he is very smart.. never poops or pees in the house.. doesnt chew my furniture and i am so greatful for all of that..but this nipping and jumping is just too much. many people on here are attacking me for thinking of using the e collar..or for trying other methods that people have reccomended.. some hot sauce on my hands and arms..beause honestly in the begining my arms and hands were TORN UP! and then some trainers had suggested pressing his lip to his own teeth..i could never do it..but my husband would.. i was told to make biting be uncomfortable to him and it is to me..but not "smashing his teeth to his lips" as comsone on here commented.. it breaks my heart because i guess he is frustrated and so are we.. and i dont know what to do.. so i really want to thank u for understanding what i am going through and being helpful to me not negative. i am so happy jacki is a great dog and companion to u now! i can only hope i have that some day, sooner then later! lol thanks again! xoxo
We have an electric collar that we use on Kirby. We had many of the behavior issues that you were describing and tried traditional therapy and it didn't even curb his negative behavior. I contacted a personal trainer and we worked with him on how to train Kirby with it. Personally, I wouldn't do it without working with a trainer. Even working with the trainer it was hard to differenciate when to use it and when not to. We started when Kirby was about 7 months old.
Kirby has just turned 1 year old and now all we have to do is put the collar on him. He sometimes still gets nippy with the kids and will get out of control, but all I have to do is put the collar on him and he settles down. I need to be in a better habit of
With working with the trainer, he helped alleviate the negative behaviors and also worked with us on positive behavior. I can now take Kirby on a walk without a leash and let him run around, but then if someone is coming I can call him into a heel and he will do it without any leash (and no zaps). If someone comes over and is fearful of dogs, I can put Kirby in an extended stay and he can stay in the room with us and not bother the other people - so I don't have to kennel him when company comes. Or we can do a family board game without a 70 lb, very tall puppy bounding through the middle of it. He is with us, but not out of control.
Our trainer recommended a number to call and I gave them information about Kirby and they sent me a collar. This place works with my trainer, so they knew what I needed. I didn't have to shop and select a collar.
thank you for all that info! very helpful.. yes i will be using it with a trainer.. would u happen to have the number of the collar place? or is it only for peoplw working with their trainers? thanks again

I looked at the name of our collar and searched for it online. Amazon actually sells it. iQ by dogtra
This is the collar we have: http://www.amazon.com/Dogtra-IQ-Yard-Training-Collar/dp/B004HX6QD6
(I don't remember the phone #, but amazon has it cheaper than what we paid anyway. LOL)
I agree with Julie and cannot over emphasize that it is best to work with a trainer when leaning how and when to use an e-collar. It can seem confusing when it appears it would be simple - just press the button when your doodle is acting in unacceptable ways….. But, there is much more to it and a qualified trainer can make a big difference in eliminating over correcting and negative use, etc.
