Hi!  Our 17 week old Cooper is a great puppy, smart and was really easy to potty train.  The only thing wrong is he keeps jumping on people he meets!  We always have to pull him back really hard with the leash so he doesn't jump on our guest/friends.  We feel awful because sometimes he gets all choked up from the leash.  He gets super excited, but he doesn't bark (good thing).

How can we train him to behave better?  Or is this something that will eventually go away when he gets older?  What can I do in the meantime?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Exactly! Our worst enemy are those who say screech in high pitch voices @ Enz and then say it is ok for her to jump. LOL.... a few weeks ago we were in Home Depot and met a neighbor of ours. She has a voice that sets coyotes howling and gets worse when she greets the dogs. I saw her coming and knew what was going to happen. I made Enzo sit and gave her the wait command. As neighbor lady approached, I told Enzo to wait again...neighbor says " is that for me or her?" I said BOTH! That sort of took Neighbor Lady back. She continued with the I don't mind the jumping thing. ( Ever want to smack someone upside the head?). In the end Enz kept her butt on the ground and Neighbor was only permitted to pet while Enz was seated. Next time : Shock collar for Neighbor! ;)

LOL!!! Too funny!  I did come across two friends who didn't mind his jumping!

Yes, Ro!! These softies don't realize they are UN training my efforts with Rip! I have to explain every time how if he jumps on you, he may jump on my 80 yr. old parents, and I cannot allow that. Thank goodness he is not big enough to knock them down, yet it won't risk it.
But then there was the time I went to my friend's house, her adorable doodle jumped on me, so I explained I was going to turn and ignore him. She said, "wow, everyone says they don't mind!" Even though she understood, I kind of felt like the jerk, lol - explaining how I was just going with the training techniques. ;) I still think it is kinder to the dog to NOT reinforce/reward jumping!

Thank you Cindy!  I guess we'll have to be patient with this one huh.  You're right he doesn't jump on us as much anymore but still doesn't get it that it applies to others too!  I'll keep working on it.  Thank you for your response!
