Zoey spends the days (while I'm at work) at my parents house.  The other day my mom calls me worn out from puppy patrol.  She tells me that Zoey has started putting her paws in her water dish.  I tell her she has never done this at my house.  She insists that the dog is making puddles all over the kitchen. So tonight, I'm sitting here, thinking she is napping on the kitchen tile, when I hear a clanking.  I peek around the corner and there she is both paws in the water dish, water slopped all over the kitchen. Arrgh!!!  Totally stumped on how to work on correcting this one.  I could put the dish up, but I would be concerned she is not getting enough water.  Anyone else experience this?  What did you try to resolve it?  Was it successful?  I guess I should just be glad I don't have a pool, cause if this is any indication, I think I would have a sloppy wet doodle 24/7 :s.

Luci does the same thing.  Always has!  She is 9 months old and I still have to keep the water bowl up.  And we have to grab it as SOON as she is done drinking, if we accidentally leave it down...she is soon swimming in it and gliding across the hard wood floor in a puddle of wet dog.

I'd love to be able to solve it but have yet to find anything that works.  We make sure she gets water right after she eats and many times throughout the day.  When she is thirsty, she RUNS towards the sink and JUMPS as high as she can AT the sink....bang.  Then she runs back and stops to look at us.  Then repeat as needed until she gets her water...silly girl.

Hi Kerri
My goldendoodle Doogle did this at first for a few months - he was obsessed with water, he could empty a water bowl in seconds with just his paws and then make footprints all over the house. I had to put huge towels under the water bowl and around it and eventually it wore off, he's now 7 months and still loves playing with water but no longer does this with the water bowl.

Never had this problem with Maddie but I'm wondering if it would help if you put her bowl inside an old roasting pan or something like that so that when she tips it at least the water wouldn't be all over your floor. You could possibly weight the pan down with something very heavy like a brick or rock.  Not so pleasing to the eye but might help with the mess.
Rooney NEVER did this - Stuart does.  It was cute the 1st time, not as funny the 2nd and by the 3rd time I was getting tired of cleaning the mess up.  Now when I catch him in the act - "NO Stuart"!  I give him a stern verbal and then I pick the water bowl up and put it out of reach.  I put it down 15 minutes or so later.  He is getting better - it hurts his feelings when he gets the verbal.  Good luck.
Sophie used to dig in her water bowl with both feet when she was a puppy.  We started using a bowl like this for her water and she stopped.  Now we can just use a regular water bowl but I still have this bowl outside as she will on occasion if something gets in the water bowl (like grass or something) she will go after it with her paws.  I also now use the plastic liner from their crate to sit their food and water on in their room in case they spill some water it doesn't get all over the place.

Hi Kerri...

One solution would be to remove Zoey"s water bowel after every meal...along with her food bowel.

This would be a great help ...as far as Zoey wanting to "go swimming in her water bowel"!  Lol...

This would also help with her potty training...which is what our trainer recommended.

I did this from the start with Sasha.

It worked beautifully...and she was potty trained very quickly with this method.

Of course...you would watch how much water she drinks at her meals...to make sure she is drinking enough.

If you are home...you could give her water later in the morning...and in the mid-aftermoon...keeping in mind that she will have to potty shortly afterward.  All.depending upon how old she is.

Once she is totally potty trained and not a puppy anymore...the time frame will be totally different.

It seems that many Doodles just love the water!!

We live on a lake...and Sasha is in the waster everyday!!

Thankfully...mostly just wanting to wade in to get cooled off.

Yes...wet paws and legs...but a Very Happy Doodle!!  Lol...

Wishing you the Very Best...keep us posted...

Bailey has been doing the same thingbut only ocassioanlly.  Drives me nuts...Sloppy doodle face and feet everywhere LOL.  She doesn't dig in it, just puts one paw in her bowl and stands there.  Looks at me  like "what" ?  Oh well.  Maybe I'll get a bowl like the one pictured to see if that helps..

Good luck!  And keep a towel handy ; )

Kai did this at first....I thought it was him trying to see where or if there was water in the bowl...I had a dark bowl, the bottom was black and thought he had trouble seeing the water, so would stick his paw in to make it move..so he would then drink it. He then thought it was fun to splash it...  He did it just for a little longer but stopped doing it...haven't had any trouble...I also put a big towel under the bowl...They just want to play in water....you could get her one of the plastic pools the children use and fill up for him to play.  Kai loves the one at the dog park....you could probably find one on sale now....
Well this morning, I just put a small amount of water in her bowl vs. filling it & she did not attempt to go for a swim.  Maybe that will work.  My mom plans to pick the water dish up and monitor her drinking (lol...that sounds like she's an alch-y). Zoey grazes throughout the day, she doesn't sit & eat everything at one sitting, so picking it up after she finishes eating doesn't really work.  We'll see how it goes.  Glad to know I'm not alone out there, but certainly hope this does not go on for months.  If it continues I will have to check out those bowls Lucy recommended.
Sounds like your plan is working Kerri...Yay!!
I had to laugh reading this one...my sister's doodle, Mable is 9 months old and has done this for months.  When she comes for a visit, the first thing i do is get the mop out because my kitchen will be just soaked..My sister actually has a pretty big water bowl, she has 3 dogs, its like a big metal mixing bowl, but she put a pretty good size rock in the middle of it.  She has to wash it daily so it doesnt grow algae, but so far Mable hasnt done it as much with the rock in it because it weighs down the bowl and she doesnt find it as appealing to play in with the rock in it.  She corrects her behavior when she is caught doing it, but, slowly she is learning that it is unacceptable.  Only time will tell, good luck...hopefully its just a puppy thing right?? lol
