And it starts...
Our Abby who just turned 3 months old, is getting so big - and so tall! Her paws now reach the edge of the table, so that nose is checking things out all the time. We don't eat at our dining room table (we eat in the kitchen) so the dining table has been the safe haven for our 2 cats. Not for much longer, I can guarantee that. Well, last evening we were all distracted doing this and that and not paying any attention to what Abby was doing. BIG MISTAKE!! She had gotten her nose up on the computer desk and grabbed my daughters MP3 player. She no longer has ear phones for it. It's not like he doesn't have everything I could find for her to chew on - pigs ears - cow hoofs - kongs - her stuffed squeeky toys - she has a toy basket and it's full!!
So at 3 months, the teething begins! How long will this last? :-/
Toby is 18 1/2 weeks, and he is just getting his adult teeth now. So I would say he's still teething until all the new teeth come in. What he likes to chew on is a bullwrinkle. Kind of disgusting, but it's not bad for him, and he can't get big pieces off of it to swallow. :)
I'm going through the same thing. Lucca is 3 months also. All he does is chew and bite. Our cats have the same safe haven!! Also, Lucca hasn't figured out how to climb the stairs so the cats can sit on the landing and he can't follow yet! It's quite humorous to watch. This will be short term as with everything else. You think you're puppy proof, then they grow and try something different! Have you tried bitter apple? Lucca sees the bottle and he stops chewing. Our golden used to steal napkins off the table. We set her up by spraying a napkin with bitter apple and let it hang over the table. We pretended we weren't watching, she grabbed it and of course hated the taste! She never pulled anything off the table or counter again. I can't say this will work for Lucca but I will try it when he starts doing this. Good luck!
Great idea - no haven't tried bitter apple. I will definitely have to get some. Thanks for the suggestion.
Our Abby HAS the stairs all figured out so we keep them gated so she can't go anywhere without us to watch her.
Cooper and Lucca are true brothers! Chew and bite is all there is. He's been able to climb the stairs since he first came home, he just can't get down and will bark to go down. I need to get some bitter apple, I like the trick you suggested as well. If I could get him to leave the Christmas Tree alone, we'd be much better off.
Lucky, now 5 mos, is better with his teething (at least he's more selective--cardboard storage boxes, shoeboxes, etc. and not the furniture). But, he still loves to scavenge mittens, gloves, etc and any food off our tables!
I realize that "this too shall pass" but in the meantime...
We just won't be able to leave alone for very long unattended - or at least on the same level of the house.
Thanks for the input.
The teething doesn't last forever, but a dog's love of chewing lasts for a few years. So the key for you will be to do your best to manage the situation so that Abby does not develop the habit of chewing inappropriate things. Because habits are hard to break. So when your eyes are not on Abby she needs to be attached to you by a leash or in a crate. I know not everybody likes crates, but I was a heavy crater and I think it helped Rosco to not develop any bad indoor habits.
Abby is crate trained - she sleeps in there at night and sometimes even crawls in there for a nap on her own. Typically if I'm doing something - like taking a bath - or cleaning on a level she isn't on, I will crate her. She had been so good about not chewing things that weren't hers - she just caught me by surprise, which is what these darling babies do. Just when you think you have things under control... lol
