I have had my Clyde who is 5 month , for going on 2 weeks He is adapting well to a new home as well as to a brother Rat terrier mix . I'm working on stopping rough housing in house between the two but they seem to love each other, Buddy the terrier is only 11 months.
Clyde is doing well in crate from 8 pm to 7:30 am
My problem so far is going to potty. It seems like Clyde doesn't empty bladder all the way I'm taking him out every hr when not in crate. I pick up water after feedings. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Rule of thumb on how long between potties is 1 hour for each month of age, plus one hour.  So at 5 months he should be able to go approximately 6 hours between potties.  Not that you have to wait that long, but thats just a ballpark.  Additionally, make sure you give him time when outside to go 2 or 3 times.  Sometimes they don't finish the first time.  Also, if he excited pees, I would stop them anytime they are playing hard in the house and take him outside.  My two girls used to get to playing and forget they needed to go pee and next thing I knew there was an accident.

In addition to advice you have already received, are you leaving him out long enough to entirely empty his bladder? Some dogs have a pattern of going more than once before they are really 'done.'

Nancey I think that is Clyde. Today I let him linger and sniff around. Peed several times. Maybe I wasn't giving him enough time. Thx

You are welcome.  I hope that solves the problem.  I had a dog once that had that pattern.

Thanks to you all. I've started leaving water out today and putting it away about 7 before bedtime. Today has been very good. No accidents. Gave treats for pottying outside. Even had some crate time. I know we are going to have good days and some accidents. We also went to vet today to make sure everything was ok. He checked out great!! A whopping 54 pounds at 5 months. He going to be a big boy! Thanks again for all advice and holding my hand so to speak. It's a good feeling to have you all to calm my fears.
Update. Clyde is doing much better with potty. I leave water out continually and he know goes a lot at one time. He still likes to walk around and go several times but I think it was a matter of me getting to know him. He makes my heart smile. Best birthday gift ever!!!

Oh thats awesome news!!! Thanks for the update!
