I have a 4 month old f1b goldendoodle. He's great, and very mellow for a puppy. The great but kinda weird thing about him is he almost NEVER barks. When someone rings the bell or knocks, he doesn't even flinch. The only time he ever barks is if he's in his crate and needs to go out, or if he's tethered and the kids are running around him. Is this normal for a puppy? and by that I mean, will he start barking more later? I love that he doesn't bark, and don't even really want him to bark if someone comes to the door (even though I know that's normal and would be fine if he does) I've never had a dog before, so I was just wondering if all this quiet is just because he's a pup.
All dogs are different. My last two golden retrievers rarely ever barked when they were puppies. My labradoodle puppy barks all the time. He just sounds like he doesn't need to bark at every little thing, which is fine. They usually learn to bark at the door later, after they start associating that sound with people coming over. He sounds perfectly normal to me!
Our puppy Max never ever barked either. He was a very laid back puppy.... unfortunately around 5 months or so he "found his bark" and boy is it a bark. He still doesn't bark very often but he has his moments. (He is only 7 months) Barks at birds, strangers that come near his fence and it is weird but he will only bark when there is someone he doesn't know at the door. (Our older dog use to be able to sense whether it was a stranger at the door and Max can do the same thing)
Hopefully you received a puppy that is just not going to bark much but I think once they become more curious the bark just seems to come along with it. (maybe I am wrong but that is based on our experience)
Our Daisy was the same way. She didn't discover her bark until she was almost a year old. Then we struggled for months to get it under control. She's coming up on her 2nd birthday. Now that the weather is warm and we have the windows open she is starting up again in reaction to noises from outside.
Maggie---who is now about 14 months---discovered her bark at around 6 months.
Neither of them react to the doorbell because we have so few visitors that use it. If we're home, the visitors just walk right in; if we're not home and someone rings the doorbell, they don't associate it with people entering the house----since we're not there to answer. So if girl scout or a delivery person rings the doorbell when we're home, they don't react.
Our Buddy (6 month f1b mini goldendoodle) does not bark either. Only a few times and that is when I was trying to teach him "up" to jump on my lap. I was holding a treat and he couldn't get to it because he wasn't jumping up and he was barking out of frustration I think. Also when we play outside some times he starts to bark at us. But he does not bark at people or other dogs, which I love! I hope it lasts!
Gavin did not bark either til after 6 months (he is 10 mons now). Now he will "woof" occasionally when he is outside and another dog passes, but not each time (there is a black lab that he likes to talk to). I am happy that the neighbours comment all the time about how quiet he is. The only time I really saw him "light up" was when we were at the campfire in the dark with a group of people and someone approached from the beach out of the darkness taking him (and us) completely by surprise. From the volume and intensity you would have thought he was a guard dog. I kinda liked that he did that and now I know he is capable of at least impersonating a protector! I am keeping my fingers crossed that his barking remains discrete.
Benny didn't start barking until he was at 6 or 7 months old and he also never "told" us when he wanted to go outside. Now he has an impressive low voice. Tyler is more the communicator. Since early puppy age he was always moaning and barking with his high pitch puppy voice. He is now 8 months and his bark is getting lower.
You shouldn't be concerned just enjoy your mellow puppy. He will start barking eventually when he is ready for it. Both of my boys don't bark when someone is at the door but will protect the house when they hear strange sounds or someone walks along behind our backyard.
Count your blessings. Leo used to be quiet when he was that age. Now he is 2 wks shy of a year old and he barks at everything - and especially at his reflection in the glass! Sigh. And I thought he was so smart.
It took a long time for treasure to start barking. Now we are working on no bark. When he sees people or another dog he wants to play with he wines and cries. When he runs with friends or plays he will bark. He barks when someone, especially a dog walks by the house, but stops when I tell him ok.
