Last week , I started to cut down emma's meals from 3 times a day to twice a day. She is almost 7 months old. I remember the vet telling me she should poo for every meal . So I would be expecting two poops / day. However, Im finding she is pooping three times a day. sometiems four. When she poops, she poops a little here and move a few steps and poop a bit more here. the consistency is soft and same coloar as her food.
is this normal?
on a side note, my mom bought these treats for her . They are like soft sausage treats that contain wheat. I told my mom that emma may not be able to digest because of the wheat. everytime she eats it i would find some yellow stuff in her poo. My mom was so excited when she brought home the treats for emma. I feeel so bad to tell her that emma cant have it. My mom also bought milkbones before and then she found out emma cant have it . The treats were adults.. so my question is do you think emma can still have those sausage treats..would her stomach be able to adapt to it?
I know Tori had a problem with with treats - very loose poops.... my mother in law always complained when I TOLD HER NO MORE TREATS! I think giving "treats" is a 'people thing'... I now just freeze some of her canned food in small balls and give them, or I cook carrots or sweet potatoes. She also loves and does fine with cantaloupe. I freeze small cut up pieces of this too. Check on the Food Group for other ideas. They even have recipes No more store bought treats for Tori. They cause too much tummy upset.
Gavin free feeds, but as a young pup he pooped 3-4 times per day and now that he is a year old he goes 2 or 3 times a day. You are in a tough position with your mom. A tiny bit of junk food once in a while (this is what I say to myself when I eat potato chips) won't hurt. I know you don't want to insult your mom - maybe you can suggest a treat to get that is healthy - For example say to her: "Emma is real wild about Darford's treat, if you ever see them." Then she will be happy to pick out a flavour and be able to "spoil" her Grand pup with a gift.
My puppy seemed to poop constantly and he also walks as he poops. Now that he's nine months old, he poops about two to three times per day. I suspect young puppies just have more active digestive systems, particularly since they probably can't absorb everything, and they become more regular as they get older. Barley also had really loose stool. I started giving him two tablespoons of canned pumpkin (not pie filling!) per meal. That helped give him more solid poops. I also switched his food to Fromm's Four Star Nutritionals. That food tends to be limited to one or two proteins; his previous food had about four different types of proteins in it and I think it was upsetting his stomach. It also has probiotics in it which help with digestion. I saw a big difference almost right away. If your food doesn't have probiotics, you could try adding one tablespoon of unsweetened yogurt to her meals. My mom started doing that with her three-month-old puppy who has similar issues; he is doing great on the yogurt.
I have had the same issue with treats. For some reason it's the moist treats that cause problems. One horrible day during puppy K, my trainer gave Barley some moist Zukes treats. Well, he got really sick and it was a mess. For training treats, I started giving him Cheerios. He does pretty well with dry treats such as Zuke's Mean Greenz and Pet Greens Treats which is a natural jerky style treat. I understand how people might get distressed when they've bought special treats for your pup and you can't give them to her. However, I would think they'd understand once you explained those types are too rich for her belly.
The treats are probably not the best for her - I wouldn't give them too her. Just explain that she needs to have only certain kinds or her stomach will get upset.
I wouldn't worry about the number of poos per day. It always varies for my Peri and she is 17 months old. It is 2-4/day in our case.
Oh, my pups were poop machines up until about 4 months ago...they are now 16 months along...pretty close to no longer being puppies :-( Any way, we had to change their diet because of health issues they both had. We first had them on Blu Buffalo, which I'm sure is an excellent food; however, after months and months of poo issues, come to find out they had exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and colitis. We had to change them to a homemade diet of beef, rice, carrots, and peas. Now, they go once a day and it's after their dinner. They get feed twice a day. Everyone was getting us all those snausages and milkbones and stuff for them too. I buy the Alpo biscuits for their treat/reward. I've been happy with that brand. They've been getting those since January. Unless you see blood, mucus, or it's not firm, don't panic just yet. But if it seems like she's not gaining weight as she should be for her age or loosing weight, you may want to ask your vet to be safe.
Buddy is 9 months and we don't usually give him treats. When we are in training class we take a pocket full of his food, he loves it! We also give him ice...it is a treat to him! His stools are nice and firm and easy to pick up! We had him on California Naturals and he actually started having loose stools, we finally switched his food after ruling out an illness. He is on Orijen and love it too and the stool is back to normal.
When my parents come to visit or when we go to see them, they understand that he needs to stick to a certain diet. If she is cooking dinner she knows she can give him a carrot or green bean, etc. Or she just gives him a couple pieces of his food or ice. Or I am sure you can find a good treat for Emma that wont upset her stomach that can be for "Grandma" to give her only.
