Toby is 12 weeks old, and is starting to do things he didn't do before - naughty things. Like the nipping/mouthing had calmed WAY down, and yesterday he was a little beast. And he's starting to dart away instead of come. And....he's starting to pee on the ceramic tile in the hall. He's fine in the kitchen/dining area, but if I give him free reign to also go into the hall, he'll pee there. Quite frustrating. We start puppy classes on Friday - can't wait! I hope I'll get some good advice and turn things around. I'd love to be able to trust Toby not to have accidents so I could let him follow me through the house more. I think he'd be more settled then.
http://www.doberman.org/articles/puppy.htm This puppy development link says that your pup is going through the seniority classification period where he wants to test your leadership role. Looks like you are heading in the right direction by starting your training classes because they suggest that enforcing the rules should begin now. Sounds like he thinks he should be the captain of your ship and he is just looking to see if you are going to step up and be the leader or you will let him run the show. Glad you asked this question because my pups will be going through this phase very soon. Hope the link helps!
Hooray for the nipping reduction!! That is HUGE..it might come back now and then, but stay calm and do what has worked.
I think you are getting ahead of yourself with your expectations. 12 weeks is still REALLY young. I would NOT expect a 12 week old to have "graduated" regarding the things you want him to learn. REALLY young still means shorter attention span, easily gives in to whims, one minute he wants to play, the next minute he wants to chew, the next minute he needs to pee, the next minute he wants to run laps around the house, the next minute he collapses. It just means he is a baby still.... He will NOT display the maturity of an adult, well-trained, respectful dog for some time. All that you are experiencing is normal. The ones with perfect puppies have the EXCEPTION to the rule--don't compare Toby to them.
Frustrating indeed!!! But all the more frustrating when your expectations are as high as yours are because you are bound to be dissapointed.
How often does he get potty breaks? (you may have mentioned it before but I don't remember) My Rosco was VERY tough to potty train. He was just oblivious and would pee in the middle of walking over his dog bed. He peed plenty outside, but didn't get the 'no inside' idea for MANY months. I had to take him outside every 15-20 minutes until he was probably 5 months. I did that to reduce the risk of accidents as much as possible. And when I'd forget, he would teach me to remember better next time.
Set your sights on goals for the next week...one week at a time. Don't expect Toby to be able to follow you around at this point. It WILL come, but not yet...not if you want zero accidents. Take him out more often...wait for him to pee...maybe even pee twice! Then play a bit, then crate. In an hour or so do it again...repeat ad nauseum.
Toby goes out after every nap, after every vigorous playtime, and after eating and drinking, and sometimes in between. It perplexes me, because it is ALWAYS on ceramic tile that he goes, nowhere else. Very strange. But....I can take cleaning up a little pee if he can agree to stop with the nipping! :)
When I clean it up I use "Out!", and scrub the grout with a toothbrush. I know the day will come when he stops, but like you said, I have to avoid posts about perfect puppies . Five days till puppy school - yay!
