She eats everything!

In my lifetime, I have had Golden Retriever puppies, Shih Tzu puppies, an Alaskan Malamute puppy, and random mix breed puppies.  I have NEVER had a puppy that eats random stuff like my Golden Doodle puppy! It's crazy what she chews on and apparently actually swallows! She will actively seek out and eat plastic. Eww. How does plastic taste good??

We are working to stop this habit in many ways, it just boggles my mind the things that she eats and I needed to vent. Love her, but she is crazy.

LExee did a lot of this type of eating at the beginning but a lot of redirecting and now at 6 months I do find that she is much better....I, now, actually when on leash let her go towards something to see if she will chew it and most times she leaves it so they do eventually learn what is edible....

Also....I increased her food when all she seemed to be eating were non-edible things and that helped a lot....she was hungry and/or her teeth were coming in....

Boy, sounds like she keeps you on your toes! Do you think swallowing is like 'claiming' - like saying, 'mine!'? Just a thought/question...

I suppose it could be but she doesn't have any guarding issues. You can take her bone or stick your hand in her food bowl while she is eating and she could care less. I think she just likes a variety in taste, maybe??

How old is the puppy? Because this breed (and any hunting breed really) learns to use their mouths like hands. They pick everything up and instinctively learn to exercise their jaws (by chewing and gnawing on things) to practice for their "job" of carrying things as hunting dogs. 

My dog is just like this. He uses his mouth like hands - dragging things around with his mouth or carrying things  - and he's a big scent tracker. Maybe your pup will be more of a hunter type?

She's six months old and she definitely seems to be a hunter/protector type. Her favorite activity is chasing butterflies and we always know if someone is walking anywhere around our house from her excited barking. That being said, she is usually barking because she thinks every single person she meets should pet her and hold her.

I can SO relate to this!!! Our puppy ate everything. Like EVERYTHING when he was a tiny puppy. He constantly had his nose to the ground and we practically had to crawl along next to him to keep him from eating something dangerous. I don't even want to tell you the gross things I pulled outta his mouth. We worked on "leave it" and "drop it" like fiends and now at 15 months, he'll drop things or leave things alone when told (for the most part), but he's mostly just interested in sticks. Thankfully.... we're still working on him leaving sticks alone...

When I tell her to leave it or give it to me, she's usually pretty good about giving up her 'prize,' but if you ever see her walk into the next room just know when you follow her, she'll have something else in her mouth. Oddly enough, she does not like nylabone type chewing toys and she won't tear up stuffed animals. She eats bully sticks in about five minutes and we're testing the waters with elk antler. She's picky in such odd ways.

They all have their own little oddities. It's so funny to hear the different things! Our pup was really not into hard toys until 6 months or so...now he's obsessed with any hard bone or plastic toy. Angus can't have any soft toys or rope toys unattended because he'll tear it apart. Too dangerous...

Hi! Just wanted to say Cooper was the same way when he was younger, tried to eat anything he came across. I would have to follow him everywhere especially in our yard. It'll get better though. He still tries to get things he is not supposed to, but I think more to get our attention. Well he is 9 1/2 months now and this morning he ate my son's little eraser :/ I made him spat it out but by then he had already eaten most of it.

Good luck, for now your eyes will have to be glued to him. Lol.

Yes, it strange how each has their own little oddities.  We lucked out with Beau.  He sees the tiniest of objects, and a speck on the patio concrete as he is going out the door, he will stop and investigate.  We rented a condo in AZ for several months and he was then 5 months old.  He found all kinds of things in nooks and crannies of this place (crayon, carpet tacks (more than one),  marble, hair rubberbands, etc.  I always knew when he found something because he would take off running and  jump up on our bed and toss the object in the air, until I came in  to investigate.  The carpet tacks scared me to death, but he has never ingested anything other than his food and treats!  Amazing to me because our standard poodle would swallow anything (including a sock) and I thought most puppies do eat things they shouldn't, but I lucked out with Charlie & Beau - neither does.
