I am looking for some suggestions. Willow just got spayed two days ago, and since the day after she has been acting totally normal like she didn't have surgery. I thought she would be lounging around as she heals. The problem is that she has so much energy...she keeps jumping up in the furniture, doing puppy laps, and just running around. I am doing all I can to keep her calm...gave her the kong and a new bully stick, but she keeps trying to get crazy. I feel bad she is has to stay inside but I don't want her to rip her stitches. Any of you had this experience? If so what did you do to keep your doodle calm? Thanks!

I ended up tethering Enzo to me. She acted as tho she never had had the surgery. Be careful, because Enz did end up ripping stitches out from. Being overly active. The prescribed a sedative for her, which I hated to use,but ended up using it. It was either that or be re-stitched. We did go on walks, both around the yard and out and about. But she was never let loose and given the chance to run and jump.
I might have to tether her to me because she is crazy. She try's to run in the house and when we come home she goes crazy. Maybe I'll also have to get a sedative for her.

Do you use a crate? If so crate her and when she is out of the crate tether her to you. In the crate give her something to chew or a stuffed kong. A little tuna oil from the can smeared over a kong takes a lot of licking, also try a smear of peanut butter on one too. You might not necessarily keep her calm but you can keep her from running and jumping.

We don't crate her...but I'll try that tuna fish oil on the kong. I just need to keep her occupied somehow..haha.
None of my dogs acted like they had had surgery after the first day! If is important that they do not jump and run around. When they started to act crazy I either put a lease on them and tethered them to me or they went to their crate with a treat for some quiet time! On the fourth day we took some short, SLOW walks and that helped the most! Good Luck!
I think I am going to take her on a slow walk tomorrow and see if that helps. She has also been so itchy so tonight I might give her a Benadryl as well and that might calm her down a bit too.
Nimbus taking it easy 3 days after surgery :-)

We had Zoe spayed 2 months ago.  After 3 days the cone was off, and I couldn't keep her calm even if I restrained her.  Since she wasn't picking at her stitches, I was OK taking the cone off at day 3.  She was back to 'normal' activity by day 4.  I'm not saying this is the best course of action, but we couldn't keep her calm so we started exercising her with walks around day 4 to tire her out.  She had inside sutchers so there wasn't much risk of er rupturing her stitches.

I'm not saying you should follow my example, just wanted to convey our experience.  Keeping a healthy 35 lb adolescent doodle calm is pretty night impossible.  We also live in a 2 story house, and the vet had said 'no stairs' for 2 weeks.  She was bounding up stairs by day 3 whether I wanted her to or not.  She came through  the recovery with flying colors, so I guess it's just a matter of gauging what your dog can do.  Good luck!

Also -when she was fussing with the incision, it was with the shaved areas and not the stitches - I think of when I have had a bikini wax in the past and can completely relate to the 'fussing' with the shaved areas :-)

one more thing - if you are really worried about her activity, as the vet for some tranquilizers.  that will at least keep her calm.

We have been lucky because Willow has not fused with her incision at all....knock on wood! She hasn't even wore the cone or the inflatable collar we bought her. Her stitches are on the outside which stinks...but it is time to start walking her tomorrow. She has just about had it with sitting around.

That's great that she's not fussing with the stitches.  Good luck tomorrow!!
