I would like to get the surgery over as soon as possible, but I don't want to inhibit his growth or development.  When is the earliest I can have him neutered without any developmental issues?

This of course, is your choice.  Many advocate early spay and neuter, but I myself am of the belief that the dog should be closer to an adult before altering.  I have based a bit of my view off of the study:  http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTermHealthEffectsOfSpayNeuterInD...

I just think that the horomone surge of reaching sexual maturity play an important role in the growth and development of a dog.  I definitely will be spaying Annie, but will be waiting until she goes through at least one heat.  She also has an inverted vulva, so the first heat normally corrects this issue in puppies as well.  Good luck with your decision, there are many passionate people on both sides of the coin... :)

I'm no expert on this but one of my friend's husband is a small animal orthopedic surgeon and he says the longer you can wait, the better it is for their bones.  I'm planning on neutering Boone at around 7-8 months.

I found one of the free breeders that doesn't send her puppies home already neutered.  She is also of the opinion that later is better.  That waiting will take care of the inverted vulva and that the hormones are needed for proper bone development.  But, this is a hot topic and you should speak with your vet .

My vet said 5-6 months of age because you don't want them to learn to learn bad behaviors, like marking territory. I had Sam neutered right before the 6 month mark. My breeder also recommended that time frame as well.
