Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I know that there have been previous discussions about collars and choking, etc. but I

recieved an e-mail newsletter today which kind of raised the issue again for me and thought I would share it for other new members. The newsletter has a question and answer section. Below I posted an excerpt from one of this week's questions.  Tara does not wear this type of collar but we use a similar one (hers DOES have a release clasp though) when training and remove it afterward. I thought I would post this in case some of you use this this type of collar.  The person answering the question stated that it is a rare occurrence but they had heard of it happening before. So apparently it was not an isolated incident.

"In May, we lost a beloved dog, when while playing, her collar got wrapped around the lower jaw of our other dog,

The collar was a “martingale” type, which I will never again use. Even with supervision, everything happened so fast, by the time we got the collar cut off (there was no release clasp), she was gone. The dog who had it wrapped around his jaw didn’t get injured, but he still will only allow us to put a slip-lead collar on him. We can’t approach him with a regular collar or harness... Unless first we have control of him with the slip lead."

Apparently there are numerous variations on this style but all have the same type working mechanism.

Thanks for the reminder. When my dogs are inside, Tacky's collar must come off because Peri drags him around by it. Many times, they just don't wear their collars unless we go for a walk or are outside in a yard.
My older mini doodle is scared of the younger smaller doodle (I am too) she bullies her badly!
