I don't beleive that seizure dieorders are any more common in Doodles than any other type of dog. This group has only 23 members out of about 7400 members on DK ( about 1/3 of 1 percent). There are people here that have Doodles with seizures due to head injury (that is our case) and there are people here that just suspected that their dog had a seizure and wanted to discuss it. Also some of the dogs that have seizures are rescues or from other unknown backgrounds, which are more likely to have medical issues due to non testing, etc.
As far as I know there are no specific tests for seizures but if the breeders knows the complete lineage of the breeding stock and has dicontinued any lines that have had seizures come up.
There is no way to tell at what age a dog will develop seizures. Some dogs develop seizures in "old" age.
Again, if you are thinking about getting a Doodle either get one from a rescue organization or from a reputable breeder. Seizures are no more common in Doodles than in any other type of dog.
Thanks for that. I know a little about seizures as one of my children has an acquired Brain injury and Epilepsy is a common in ABI. Also our cat developed them in old age. He's a Birman and now aged 19!. I'm reassured when you give me the stats. I should of course have looked at them myself. This is a great site but it does throw all the problems as well as the good stuff. On balance though it's a terrific resource and forum in the whole spirit of Social Networking.
Best regards,
Nicky
Here is a link that I thought was interesting:
http://www.canine-epilepsy.net/
They state that the overall rate of epilepsy in dogs is 4% so our Doodles are well under that.
