Diabetic Alert Dogs Better Than Tech Tools

Very good read about service dogs

Welcome!  Tia was two when we began her training.  Our trainer said she trained six months faster than other dogs he trained.  The key was her willingness to please people.  A good trainer made all the difference for me.  If you can't find a trainer there are lots of videos you can find on the web.  I like the dog whisperer.  Good luck.

Greetings all,

I'm new and just adopting a 2 year old Labradoodle. I am wanting to train him to become a service dog but I wasn't sure if it's "too late." He already listens well and helps when he can. Any suggestions on reference material?

My trainer is now training Tia to fetch.  He is wowed by her advancement.  He said her brains and willingness to please has set her apart in her training from other dogs he has trained.  I am truly blessed.

Carrie B.......I was reading your post on May 11th about you wanting a labradoodle service dog. I am not sure what type of service dog you are in need of, but have you ever considered training your dog yourself??? I wanted a breed specific dog also as my service dog ......... so I got the book (or you can get the DVD) Teamwork and trained my dog myself. I started training at 12 weeks when I got my dog and found it very rewarding and your dog really bonds with YOU instead of a trainer.

I have a labradoodle I bought from a breeder to be trained as a service dog for my son, who has Down syndrome.  After a LONG search, I found a service dog trainer who happens to be in my local area (Greenville, SC), so we are working with her to train my puppy.  In my search, I found very few service dog trainers who will train your own private dog.  The ones I found weren't local, so my puppy would have had to go live with them for 4-6 months for training.  Message me privately if you want any more info.  Good luck!!  :)

Hello everyone! I have Maggie, a 2 year old F1B companion pet and am in need of a service dog. Maggie is my doggie bestie but bless her heart she is no service dog.

I have contacted all the organizations I have found and am having a hard time finding a place that can provide a poodle or poodle mix service dog (that isn't charging 15 to 20 thousand dollars). I am about to get on the list at http://www.canineassistants.org/ in Ga but was told the wait would be very long due to my being breed specific. I don't have a choice in that though, my son is allergic to dogs and has been fine with poodles and certain poodle mixes.

Before I get on this list (and wait for as long as 7 years!!) I thought I would ask y'all for any advise or maybe places that might be better for me to look into.

Hi Ann,

I've flown several times on SouthWest with Buster.  Here are some of the things I do when flying. After I make the reservation I call and let them know I have a Service Dog. I go though the metal detector then I call him through by himself. Get a preboarding pass at the gate. Pick a flight later in the morning so we can have a long walk and potty time before the flight.  If I have to lay over I make sure there is time to visit the dog relief area.  Avoid Denver for lay overs unless you are in Terminal A were the dog relief area is.  Keep at least one meal for your dog in your carry on just in case your luggage gets lost. Have a copy of his shots with you. On his collar I put a capsule that has a paper inside saying where we are going and address/ phone numbers of local people. (found the capsule at REI)   It took Buster a few flights before he learned to lean into the take off and landings. He also wanted to look out the window.  Be relaxed!  If you stess they will stress.  Have fun!  Would love to hear about anyone who has been on a ship.

Hi, Bella my Labradoodle became a Service Dog for me in November 2011. My husband and I appreciate her help and companionship as we travel. However, wondered if anyone has had their Service Doodle on a ship or airline? Tips?
