Congratulations and Welcome. Here's some links that I found to be helpful.
The training and socialization can start as soon as you get her.
Looking forward to more pictures!

Welcome Sarah!
I knew a family a few years ago (mother and her two children) who all had Osteogenesis Imperfecta. They had two service dogs who were a great help to them.
This is a yahoo group that I have really enjoyed belonging to:

There are some wonderful resourses on youtube for owner training
that I also used. I'll look some of them up and post them.
Are there any specific tasks that you would like to train?
I would also suggest to start your puppy in a basic obedience class as soon are he/she is done with shots.
One thing I would say is find the way of training that you feel comfortable with and is the safest for your daughter. There are so many ways to train and so many reasons to choose each method. Tia trained very quickly and was very safe for me but we did not do clicker training. All I am saying is everyone has to find what they are comfortable with. We found a personal trainer that will be Tia's trainer for her life span and what a difference he made in our life.
Oh by the way welcome.
Sarah, that is great! Congratulations! One of the best sites I know of, for people training their own dogs, is a forum that deals only with clicker training your own service dog. The members of the forum are disabled people who have trained one or more service dogs or those who are new to it. Some are VERY experienced and you can find great ways to train for all sorts of things...plus you can ask questions and get answers from experts who have been there. Here is the link (but you have to request to join): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OC-Assist-Dogs/
Best wishes!
Hi, We are going to be getting an Australian Labradoodle (Medium to mini/medium) puppy at the end of May (to be born at the end of March) that we are going to try and train to be a service dog for our 5 year old daughter that has Brittle Bones (Osteogenesis Imperfecta).
I am excited I found this site and would love any advice from those of you that have anything to share that worked well (or didn't work well) for you. We live in North Carolina.
Thanks!
Thanks for the welcome! I am sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this site. I seem to have never ending computer problems and we had a leak in the roof so my computer was down for a bit.
I am working with Tia on helping me up the stairs when I feel weak or unsteady. I also am having to remind Tia of her basic training in the stores. I haven't taken her hour much because of my health so she is a bit off on her training. I have a problem with my husband and taking Tia with us when we go out. I have told him that he doesn't make a good service dog. He says I am worse now than I was because I am so dependent on Tia. This is an ongoing fight and so Tia gets little training in restaurants. The first and only time I took her to a restaurant she was so good I was so proud of her. I had gone to lunch with my older brother and his wife. They praised her and did not mind her coming along. The waitress forgot Tia was there asleep and she almost stepped on her!
I am glad this group is here and I will try to check in more often.
Kathy
