Welcome to the group Kathy. Training a service dog is very different then training a pet I have found. Would you like to share what you are currently working in your training sessions? How old is Tia?

Hi! I am so glad to find this group! Tia has been being trained to be my service dog for the last 5 or 6 months. Our trainer has said that other than what we are working on now he has no suggestions on improvement. He had lots to say about Tia having my number and me needing to be tougher. He was very impressed with how quickly Tia learned commands and settled into being my service dog. I taker her almost everywhere. I just wanted to share with you because I am so proud of Tia. Thanks

I apologize for not introducing myself before I posted a request for advisors...I was pressed for time and wanted to put that out there...
I am Jacque Reynolds, I have been breeding Doodles since 2004 and we have donated roughly 35% of all of our puppies for service/guide and therapy work. We incorporated as a non-profit so that we might be able to obtain funding to help us grow and reach more people.
I have found that Doodles are especially suited to this work because of their sensitivity and their social natures.
We incorporate the studies of Anthrozoology (human animal interaction) and animal ethology into our program.
I look forward to getting to know you all better.
Oh...we are in northern California. :o)

I'd like to start a private dialogue with people who have either taught someone to train their own dog or people who have been successful in training their own SD. We are conducting a scientific study (to benefit dogs and their people) and I'd love to get an advisory board together. If interested, please contact me. You can use DK or reach me through the contact portion of our web page at www.gabbyjackranch.org

DeeAnn, Yes that IS a challenge -- I can understand you must be careful about who touches Buster, and sounds like he's learned the lesson well. I guess you may have to remove the vest if they insist on a "pat-down"? We also must be strict on no petting altho just for reasons of distraction -- Alfie loves everyone, especially kids, and needs to focus on his work for safety reasons! Actually -- one time we were working in Target & 3 ladies approached with high-pitched oohing and ahhhing (he's really TOO cute!) -- and Alfie got so distracted by them he walked into a post! Not good for a guide dog, haha! BUT, he's only 7 months old (tomorrow) and actually is doing super well for his age. He loves to work and is a quick learner. I love training him!

Hi Beth, Thank you. I was wondering how I might handle a "pat-down".
Buster has learned that if he is in his "working vest" that no one is allowed to pet him. He will move away from people to the point of getting behind me to allow me to stop them. I am pretty strick on this because perfume/lotion on a person can have negative effects on my health. Now if we are with "safe"
people (scent free) and no vest he will say hi and allow himself to be petted.
The only option that I can think of is to unvest him for a pat-down. I'm flying Southwest and have my ticket. I will call ahead and talk to them about bulkhead seating. How old is Alfie? How is he doing in his training?

Hi DeeAnn, I'm looking forward to finding out more about other service doodles also! Congratulations on your new home & good luck with your first flight! I know of many who fly with guide dogs and I know some airlines are better-educated than others on accessibility issues. Hopefully if you book ahead (bulkhead seats for the leg room!), and checkin early (you can usually do it online now) -- all will go smoothly. I know of one friend who always walks thru the metal detector first, leaving service dog in a stay, then calls the dog to her thru the detector. That's because the hardware in the leash & harness invariably cause it to go off. Her dog doesn't seem to mind the security "pat-down" she gets afterward...come to think of it the airline people probably enjoy petting the dog too, haha! :-)

Welcome Beth and Sandra. I look forward to hearing more about your doodles.
It has been a busy year for Buster and I. Buster turned two a few weeks ago and we moved into our first home.
Finally a safe haven were I can eliminate all the triggers that I'm effected by!
At the end of May I will be taking my first airline flight with Buster back to Iowa. It's been 15 years since I've been back to see family. I'm excited and nervous. The next few weeks I'll need to get copies of the local and federal laws to carry with us...just in case we run into access issues. Any suggestions from those of you who have flown with your service dog?
In the last year Buster has been invaluable in his alerts. He has taught me a few things about taking care of myself and not ignoring my body.
Hope everyone is well and I look forward to getting to know everybody better.

Sandra,
That is neat -- I have seen several mobility service dogs but never a doodle! I will have to look up Assistance Canines of Texas also -- we're in Texas too (Austin).
