Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi All,
We just secured a lovely home rental on Coronado for the month of July where the owners were kind enough to forgo their "no pets" policy as I told them we had a labradoodle - they understood she is non-shedding so we got the green light! I'm excited at the prospect of taking Coby for the month BUT a little concerned as we'll have to make arrangements for one anticipated overnight trip. I'd like to find out about reputable, clean (of course) accommodations in the area and where else to research than with my doodle loving friends in the area?
ALSO - since our renters have been so accommodating, what can I do to ensure that we don't introduce any unwelcome guests into their home by way of…..fleas? We generally don't encounter that out here in AZ but I understand that can be an issue on the beaches of So Cal. I plan on talking to my vet soon but again, any advice from those in the area would be most welcome!

So…..from what I'm gathering…..even if we don't take Coby to the beach ourselves, just by nature of OUR going to the beach or her being in the general environment, it can be a source of contact? There isn't a lot of carpeting in the house from what I recall - some throw rugs downstairs - mostly upstairs in the bedrooms….and we do let Coby sleep on the bed here at home with us. I'm wondering about the GI etc effect of Capstar on dogs so I'll have to investigate risk vs. benefit. Hadn't planned on packing up our vacuum with us.
I remember having to deal with lice when my kids were little and that was NO FUN. This sounds similar. I'm thinking maybe I ought to look into a dog friendly hotel in Laguna Beach and getting a dog sitter, although even if I do that there's always the possibility of having fleas in the hotel room. Roll of the dice, I suppose….
California as a whole is a source of fleas! Lol If you have permission I would keep him with you. In theory you can be a carrier just as much as he can. I would check him daily if you don't see fleas it's not an issue. My last dog NEVER got fleas, it was a true blessing, and still today we have no idea why?? With these two, my doodle get fleas quicker than my whoops-a-doodle? Go figure and she's the one with all the hair!
There's all kinds of wives tales on what to add to food to prevent fleas; garlic, brewers yeast, etc. but neither myself nor my folks have ever run across one that really works ( and my mom is 90)
Worst case scenario, if and that's a big if there is a flea problem set off a flea bomb, go have breakfast/lunch then come back and toss the container??
Enjoy your vacation with your fur baby. San Diego has some great dog beaches/parks and from what I am discovering is very dog friendly throughout. Let us know when you are in town and we can plan a doodle romp in San Diego. I look for any excuse to go with my girls!
OK flea bomb works for me! Maybe I ought to plan on doing just that before we vacate the premises! Where in San Diego do you live? Not that I know the area all that well.
SO APPRECIATIVE of all the advice, many months in advance but such is my planning process which looks like in paid off well in one area: we had befriended the concierge at the hotel we stayed at last week, who has a golden doodle of his own and had emailed me to say he'd be happy to have Coby for the night if/when we spend an evening away so one issue down! I feel much better knowing she'll be cared for in a happy, doodle-loving home. And now I'm better prepared to have an informed discussion with my vet as well as what to be on the look out for and treat the home in case of any issues there. Thanks, So Cal Group! Hope to run into some of you during our next stay :-)
