Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give you all a heads up regarding a food inconsistency problem I encountered recently with the latest large bag of Acana Duck and Bartlett Pear I received from Chewy.com. It had pieces interspersed throughout the bag coated with a white powdery looking substance, which may or may not have have been mold (it didn't smell bad, but I wasn't about to taste it). I had only stored the food for 2 weeks before opening it and making the discovery.  Chewy resolved the problem quickly, giving me a full refund (they offered to send a new bag, but since I was changing Oscar's food to a weight management one which had just shipped, I opted for the refund). They told me they would inform their Supply department of the problem. I've also contacted Acana, but so far haven't heard back from them.

The percentage of affected kibble was small, and would have been easy to miss right away. Sifting through your new dog food is probably a good practice in order to identify any problems in consistency early.

Here's a picture of the affected kibble (which I sent to Chewy).

Thanks for the update Debb. It will be interesting to hear what their test shows, if anything.

Looking forward to the results of the testing.

This whole discussion was a HUGE eye opener for me.  I LOVE DK!!  I confess, we go through a 28 lb bag of food in 5 weeks, but it's not kept in an airtight bin.  The lid for the one I have been using doesn't shut tightly due to over filling over the past year.  I'll be looking for a new storage bin!  Or perhaps, I'll just start storing in the freezer.  Thanks everyone!

Thanks for this discussion.  I use Acana Lamb and Apple (no problems) and once I open it, I put it in an airtight container, mostly to protect it from attracting mice and to keep it from getting stale.  I don't know if dry kibble can get stale but Finn seemed to have a much better appetite with a new bag than one that had been around a couple of weeks.  We use up the food in 3 to 4 weeks. I used to wash out the container each time but must admit I've gotten lazy.  WIll be interested to see what Champion finds.

Prior to his IBD diagnosis, JD was a fairly picky eater who was also always much more interested in his food when it came from a newly opened bag. And I can definitely smell the difference between kibble that's freshly opened and kibble that was opened a couple of weeks ago.
