I just got Yetti one of those big, roasted beef knuckle bones, and she is scraping away at it. Seems excellent for her teeth. But I noticed some small chunks are coming off - they aren't sharp, the bone is rather porous, the really chewed parts are even soft, but I'm worried now that it isn't safe. Any thoughts?

After JD's episode with the ham bone last November, I would not trust any bone that is soft enough to be crumbling into small chunks. That "porous" description sounds a lot like the way the inside of the ham bone looked. He walked around with bone fragments inside him for a couple of weeks before a series of lucky incidents happened and alerted me to the fact that he had undigested bone fragments in his intestinal tract.

I've heard that knuckle bones are safe, too, but  I won't give any cooked bones other than huge beef marrow bones  any more.

What type of bones are the best?  Shiloh's breeder said to use soup bones and boil them for 30 minutes ~ I have not been brave enough to try them.

"Soup bones" is a very vague term. Any kind of bone can be used for soup, and 30 minutes of cooking is not necessary.

We have dozens of discussions here in the Food Group about marrow bones. These are beef bones, from the leg of the cow, (the femur) and they are not edible. You can buy them in the meat department of any gorcery store, many butchers will cut them to order for you, and you can also buy them in the freezer section of private pet supply stores- NOT Petsmart, Petco, etc. In stores that stock them, you can also get elk, bison, and ostrich marrow bones.

You can give them raw, or you can microwave them for ten minutes, remove the marrow, and cool. Or you can boil them for awhile, but then you'll lose the marrow.

Please do a search in the Food Group discussion section for more info on marrow bones, and other kinds of bones, too.

OK, I am sufficiently freaked out. I took away the knuckle bone and put a marrow bone in a pot to boil. It is now cooling in the freezer. Too bad, really, I have never seen her like a bone as much as she liked that knuckle!

The chunks would scare me......

We have a giant femur - beef????  And we have smaller hollow beef bones.

We give the doodles natural white knuckle bones as a special treat now and then.  We only bring them out when we can supervise.  They do crumble, but it's into small pieces.

We also have natural femur bones out all the time - they love them and it takes a very long time for them to wear them down.

I just realized that I have been giving her knuckle bones all along, the difference is before I just got  the meaty kneecaps, and the more recent purchase was the entire joint...the pieces she breaks off, I can press my nail into them to split them, so I'm not really worried about sharp fragments anymore....but if I end up giving them to her again I will supervise VERY carefully....

I would try a raw bone, but I am worried about the mess....
