Well, apparently I do.  I look over all of the ingredients before I buy anything for my dogs.  However, tonight I was eating my general mills Basic 4 (by Fiber One) cereal and do you know what one of the preservatives is???..... BHT!
I'm assuming the FDA has pretty strict regulations on the amount of BHT in human food compared to what's allowed in dog food, but should I just throw this cereal away?

This made me start thinking some more about what I eat compared to what my dogs eat.  I won't buy anything with artificial colorings.  Most of the treats I buy are organic.  The rest are all-natural.  Then when I think about all the candy, soda, processed foods that I eat, it's kind of disturbing.

Does anyone else feel like their dogs eat better than they do?

On a better note, my sister's bday gift to Sherlock finally arrived (5 days late!).  She sent me a really fun cookbook full of wonderful dog treat recipes.  Seriously some of these things I would serve at a cocktail party lol.  http://www.k9treat.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=86&c...

Yes, my dogs do eat much more nutritiously than I do, How cute that your sister sent Sherlock a gift.
BHT is in lots of cereal. I'm not too afraid of it in human food. But I probably do pay more attention to what I eat than my dogs...but it's WAY easier to control what my dogs eat and select their food because I feed kibble.
(Says the Dietitian who just ate boxed Mac n Cheese that probably contained Red Dye 40...but at least she plopped in handfuls of spinach!)
I've always been very aware of the nutritional value of what I eat and what I fed my family. What's changed for me is that now my dog eats as well as I do.
I was at the pet supply store the other day trying to help a lady choose a new food for her dog. She had been feeding her dog Beneful from the grocery store. Her dog is 8 years old, and she had never heard about the 2007 recalls; her mouth was hanging open in shock when I told her about it. I couldn't quite get over the fact that she could have been feeding one of the recalled foods and wouldn't even have known about it.
The FDA is not as strict as they could or should be, due to pressure from food manuffacturing lobbyists. My daughter buys soda at the Mexican food store here in my area. Coke and Pepsi don't put high fructose corn syrup in the products they sell to foreign markets, because they aren't allowed to by law. Only Americans get the benefit of all that crap. The laws in Europe are much stricter about additives and preservatives in food, too, for humans and canines.
I agree, I started feeding my dogs and cats better, because I am meticulous about what I eat and cook for my family. But that comes from years of training to be a body builder, then getting a physiology doctorate degree.

Everyone should be watching the show on ABC "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution". It is despicable what food is served in so many schools. Now is the time to be teaching our young children how to eat right!!
This is true about Jamie Oliver's show. I was totally shocked about it!! He is doing some good!
I have been watching the Jamie Oliver show. It is quite enlightening. My dogs eat better than the people in my house. I can control their food intake. My human family though are extremely picky and don't eat anything happily but beef and potatoes! They are elderly adults and know better but I can't exactly punish them! I just try to sneak in something good once in awhile.....
I have a very sensitive stomach which I "inherited" from my Dad, so I've always had to be very conscious of what I eat. I then passed this on to one of my daughters and my son. Any foods that are high in fat absolutely kill us. As a result, I've become very used to cooking and watching everyone's diet over the years. It only seems "fitting" that I would have a dog with IBS....why should he be any different from the rest of us? Now I just have to use the same diligence with what I feed him as the rest of the family. I still run into problems with my son when he's out...he'll take chances with things he knows he shouldn't eat, and then pays the price. It drives me crazy because he absolutely knows better. I don't have this problem with my "other son", Guinness....LOL
I have a cat with IBS. I switched him to a raw diet, problem solved. No grains or carbs of any kind for that kitty! Does Murphy eat a raw diet?
No, he's fine...it's Guinness with the IBS. I am home cooking for him, and he is doing great. Any kind of kibble is a problem for him, but since I switched him over our problem is pretty much solved too.
Oh your last line said you don't have this problem with your other son, Guiness.....and I was thinking you meant Murphy had the IBS, Guinness not. But now I re-read and see your REAL son. LOL. I am slightly air-headed today!
Real son eating out, I meant! Sigh. I give up
