I just came across this video by Dr. Marty Goldstein (I apologize if this has been discussed before, I could not seem to find it within the search).  I am interested in thoughts...Karen?

I currently feed Fromm Beef Veggie Fritatta along with boiled, very lean hamburg (Picky dogs) as a topper.  I have also used Stella and Chewy Meal Mixers as a topper.  I have 2 dogs and for financial reasons, I would rather not completely switch to freeze dried raw but after watching this video, Dr. Goldstein seemed to make sense.  He did mention using his food as a topper so I thought I would maybe try that.  Karen....what do you think?

As always thank you in advance :)

This is the second time this week I've been asked about Dr. Marty's food, so I have to guess that there is something going around on FB about it?
The short answer is that in many veterinary circles, Dr. Marty is considered a quack on the same level as Dr. Oz is for humans: a snake oil salesman, huckster, and nothing he says is to be believed.

But let's go over what he says in this video.

Basically, his information is for people who are feeding things like Beneful and Pedigree.

Most of it is what we have been saying here in the Food Group from day1. It's why we have a recommended brands list.
Yes, artificial preservatives are bad and can cause health problems. That's why none of the brands on our recommended list contain them.  Our brands use only vitamin E (tocopherols) as a preservative. So check that one off your list.
Next, he talks about "fillers". Again, none of our recommended brands contain junk fillers like brewer's rice, or the big three of corn, soy or wheat. So check that one off your list too.
His third one is by-products. Um, do I really have to tell anyone here that we never recommend any food that contains by-products?

So if you feed any of our recommended brands, you are already avoiding Dr. Marty's terrible health hazards.

Now we come to his 3 "Super Nutrients" : Organ meat, Omega 3s, and prebiotics.

Omega 3 fatty acid is a big subject here, and i have discussed it many times. All of our recommended brands contain good Omega 3 content.
The "ptrebiotics that Dr. Marty recommends are flax, carrots, pea flour, and ginger. While there is no evidence that these are of any great benefit to dogs, they are all in most of our recommended formulas. ( BTW, pea flour, in fact, is currently being blamed for the taurine deficient form of DCM that everybody is so worried about now.) There is nothing special about any of them, and you certainly don;t need to buy Dr. Marty'sd foods to get them.

Organ meats. Well, that Stella & Chewy's you are currently using as a topper is full of them. So why would you need to switch to Dr. Marty's food as a topper when you are already using a food that is very similar (and I would say, far superior) to his? Oh yeah, and it's also raw.
I use the S & C Meal Mixers as a topper on all of Jasper's meals, too.
Dr. Marty might make sense to you, but there are some things he says that don;t make sense and kind of show that he doesn;t know what he's talking about.
Like, did you happen to catch the part where he says that dogs who don;t get enough sunlight need to get extra vitamin D?
Well, humans synthesize vitamin D from sunlight. Dogs cannot, no matter how much sunlight they get; they have to get vitamin D from food. It is one of principal differences between human and canine nutirional needs, and anyone who has read an entry level textbook in canine nutrition knows that.
So it kind of destroys Dr. Marty's credibility for me that he not only doesn;t know know that, but he is also giving you and everyone else who views that video false, incorrect information. I do not want to patronize such a person, and I don;t want to encourage anyone else to do so either.
I could go on with other examples of false and incorrect statements, (the crap about how the food affects the dog's temperament is really out there) but hopefully you get the idea.
Continue using the S & C Meal Mixers as toppers and forget about Dr. Marty. His info is for the people who are still buying their dog's food at Walmart.
You are doing everything right for your dog in terms of feeding.
Of course, since you are feeding the exact same kibble and using the exact same topper as I am, I might be slightly prejudiced, lol.

Karen...Thank you so much for your response, you are a wealth of information and the time that you take to respond is greatly appreciated.  I have done (in my opinion) so much research and just when I feel like I'm doing the best, an article gets posted on FaceBook and I start to question myself, even though some of what you have said, I was already comparing ingredients and saying that was in in his food, is the same as what I am feeding.  I guess I needed the reassurance.  That's it, I'm done.....LOL!  I'm giving myself a pat knowing that my pups are probably eating better than my hubby and certainly getting more love and attention than him.  I didn't really say that did I???

Again, thank you and enjoy your day!!!

I'm always glad to provide reassurance. :)

The other person who asked me about Dr. Marty's food this past week was Jasper's breeder. She too does a great job feeding her dogs & pups (Jasper has never had even a loose stool from the day he came home) but also needed reassurance. :)

I'll reiterate my standard advice: Use FB for sharing photos and communicating with friends, looking at cute pictures, laughing at silly memes, etc but absolutely ignore any advice or information about health or diet that you see on FB, especially in dog groups. Misinformation & ignorance abound there.
And go ahead and pat yourself on the back, you deserve it. I'm sure your husband understands. :)
