Gunky eyes

After reading through Darla's discussion I wondered about "gunky eyes".  Ever since we got Charlotte (2 - 2 1/2 yr old) - about 4 months ago I've had to clean her eyes 3-4 times a day.  It never occurred to me that it might not be normal.  Is there a normal?

I usually do one or two rounds of it depending on if she needs it or not, I always keep some on hand, in fact I just ordered some more because I am almost out!

For what it's worth, we were having a lot of eye gunk with our puppy and at the suggestion of someone on DK, we switched her water from tap to purified.  Eye gunk went away almost entirely within about 2-3 weeks of the switch.  We went from multiple cleanings per day to 1 cleaning every 4 days (and even then it's less).  It was a simple fix for us, but I've read of others where the gunk was related to diet or other environmental factors.  And I believe some of it is hereditary.
