Homecooking Committee

Recently, I have been in touch with a lady whose adopted doodle was diagnosed with a severe illness, and she was interested in homecooking for him. I had to scramble through the discussions here to find those of you who might be able to help her. I was really wishing I had a list of all our Food Group members who home cook for their doodles for easy access.

Since this is bound to come up again, and since we also have many members who are interested in homecooking but don't quite know how to get started or go about it, I thought it would be a good idea for those of you who have had success with homecooking to post yourselves here so that those with questions can find you "Dark Side" people, lol.

I usually make something different every week. This is 5# Ground Turkey, 2 bags froz green beans, 1 bag froz. carrots, chick peas, and lentils. It cost about $8-10.00 and will last me about 12 days. Longer if I 50/50 it with Wellness dry food. I will add yogurt, or cottage cheese to stretch it as well as he loves both. He gets about 2 cups total of food 2 x a day.
I have just gotten back into home cooking this past few weeks and now that he's a few months older and more opinionated, when we put down regular dog food only, we get this "hummph" sigh and a look like " REALLY? You expect me to eat this?" But ofcourse he eventually does. Has really slowed down on his eating lately even with homecooked foods. Maybe the 111 degree heat is getting to him.

You can also use lima beans. Jackdoodle will not eat any kind of fruit or vegetable in any form, but he absolutely loves lima beans!

Forgive me, this is not the appropriate place for this, but my heart is broken; I got word this a.m. that Nietzsche's owner had to have him PTS. Tests showed he was much worse off than anyone knew and he was basically starving to death. There was nothing that could be done for him.
Thank you to everyone here who offered to help. And in memory of this sweet boy, serve up a little extra love when you feed your doodles tonight.

Oh this is sad, but even sadder to have him starving to death and have him suffer so as I know you already know. I will definitly be giving Murphy an extra big portion of homecooking tonight in honor of Nietzsche! RIP little guy and may you never be hungry again!
