Leslie, check out the DK Cookbook Group, lots of recipes there.
Do you have a dehydrator? We have a few discussions here in the Food Group about making dehydrator treats, those are usually very low cal and completely grain free.
I make pumpkin peanut butter treats. One can pumpkin, one plain greek yogurt and equal parts creamy peanut butter. Mix, put in ice cube trays and freeze for 12 hours.
There is almost no food in the world that is more calorie dense than peanut butter, so while these are probably healthy and delicious, they're not "low calorie", lol.
I make my own and Lincoln loves them. Some of the ones I have bought ( and they were expensive brands) he would just smell and walk away. The ones I make do have grains, but he does not have any grain issues. You can look on Pinterest too for some other ideas. You can also bake thin slices of sweet potato. they take a few hours and do not keep very well, they got soft on me after a few days.
Dog treats
I Cup oatmeal
1 Cup whole wheat flour
2-3 Tbsps peanut butter or 1/2 cup pumpkin
1 egg and some water to just blend if too thick.
You can also use applesauce or a mashed banana or 1/2 cup cooked sweet potato. Add 1-2 strips of cooked crumbled bacon . they are very versatile, you can add whatever your fur baby likes!. Mix and match ingredients.
Mix all together and roll out to about 1/4 inch thick( may need some more flour so they don't stick to the rolling pin ) . Cut with cookie cutters or just cut into strips or small squares. Place on cookie tray ( can be close they will not spread)
Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave them in there until they get hard or take out of you like them softer.
Thanks for this recipe. I just made them and they were easy and a BIG hit with my two. They never tire of the sweet potato chips I make, but a little variety is nice.
glad you liked and your furry friends liked them! I find they are easy to make and you can add different things that your dog likes. Lincoln does not like banana, so I cannot add them.
Mary Ann - thanks for the recipe. I am baking today!
hope you like them. they are easy to make. I made a batch yesterday. Sweet potato with a little bit of peanut butter . I have a bone shape and I use a heart and a star. I got 26 "cookies' out of my batch. But it depends on the size of your cookie cutters. Let me know how they were and what you used! Enjoy.
