Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I am a food top-a-holic and I have taken complete leave of my senses!

Too ashamed to post this in the main forum, but I need to own up.  I am a top-a-holic.  Here is my latest foray into madness:  I have been buying cheap cuts of steak on sale (the last one was $5 for two sirloin steaks each bigger than the size of your hand).  I cook them up in a frying pan, chop into little cubes and put them in the freezer.  Ok, so now the really crazy part:  a then put some water in the pan that I cooked the steaks in, simmer to create a broth and then freeze it in an ice cube tray.  At feeding time I pop a beef broth cube and a few chunks of steak into the mircowave, mix in with the dry food and voila! a clean bowl.  Now before the boys in the white coats come for me, I think that my home-made topper is cheaper than the equivelent of canned dog food that I would normally (and less successfully) use.  This combined with my home made biscuits and sweet potato chews - well let just say I am saving all kinds of money!  Okay cue the white coats.  See what you've done to me Food Groupers!!

Ha Ha "White Coats come for me" Ha Ha

Love Love Love your idea, I am going to copy you, if you don't mind. Please send the recipe to your homemade biscuits and sweet potato chews. Mmmmm they sound really good!

Here is the recipe for Donna's Sweet Potato chews:

And my biscuits, along with several other great recipes:

Note lately, I have been substituting peanut butter for half the margarine called for in the recipe to rave reviews.

If we call the guys in the white coats for you BG, there are many of us who would have to join you in the padded room.  I'm just getting ready to cook a couple pounds of ground chicken to mix with the boys food for the next few days.  I've even started buying larger steaks and roasts to be sure I have "leftovers" for them.  I would never tell my kids about this...they are already planning an intervention.

I knew I could find support from like-minded crazys here lol.  I often caution my husband when I am doing these crazy doodle lady things:  "Don't ever tell!" He says "Are you kidding?  Do you think I would want people to know?"

I always cook chicken or ground beef as a topper and always cook green beans for the boys. Sometimes a little baked sweet potato.  BG....I did not know I was crazy until your post :)  I thought I was a normal doodle "mom".  Do you mean to say some dogs just eat dog food?  LOL.    Wilson would eat anything at anytime...Murph is my picky little guy so I have always had to make his more interesting.  Now I do the same for Wilson because Murph is also a very slow eater and would just let Wilson scarf down both bowls of food if I didn't give Wilson something special too.  At least if I am crazy it looks like I am in good company :)

Oh boy......I can't let Banjo see this.....he'd have his backpack packed and be outta here before I knew what was happening!

Great idea!

Just finished a batch of frozen yogurt treats for Quincy, he is always looking for his Dad's ice cream so I thought I would make him his own. Just plain yogurt, peanut butter and a few dried cranberries. He hasn't had any yet but he really enjoyed licking out the bowl.

If I were you, I'd just put some of the chopped meat into the broth in the icecube trays.  Then it's already to be popped into the microwave together...

I do something similar with rice for my doodle.  I make up a huge batch of rice in my rice cooker using 1/2 broth and 1/2 water.  Once the rice is done, I let it sit in the cooker to cool.  Then I take my 1/3 cup measure (the new silicone collapsible ones are great for this) and squish the rice into the measuring cup.  I plop the rice out onto a cookie sheet and then put the whole sheet into the freezer.  Once they are all frozen, I pop them off and put them together into a freezer bag.  I can get a whole month's worth out of one batch.  Grab one and microwave it for 30 seconds (with a cube of pumpkin that I've also frozen into icecube trays).  Easy!

Ha! Ha! I just love this discussion. I'm always looking for more ideas to make Sadie's food interesting.

You aren't crazy, this is very normal behavior!  I buy large quantities of chicken breasts when they are on sale. Stick them in the microwave on 60% power for 10-15 minutes, cut them into small pieces, place into baggies, into the freezer they go.  I'll keep one in the refrigerator which is enough to top Monty's dinner for about 5 days.  The last time I did it, I froze 9 weeks worth of toppers.  He gets yogurt in the morning, chicken or raw sweet potato in the evening.  :)

FANTASTIC, now beyond everything else I do for Daisy Doodle I have make her food toppers?

Only kidding, what a great idea.

Wonderful idea, the white coats may end up getting a lot of us.....!    LOL!
