Yes, you can give her either pumpkin or sweet potatoes. I'd go with the latter, they're higher in calories.
Chances are good that she has giardia even though the test was negative. I'd bring a few more samples in tomorrow.
Should I take the sample in on July 8th or July 29th, since she just had it tested July 3rd?
Thanks!
Karen, another question, how much sweet potato? She is hopefully about 6#'s Also, I assume just peel and boil?
Much easier way to fix sweet potatoes, with almost no clean up. Microwave them. Most microwave have a "baked potato" setting. No peeling or washing needed, just microwave it and let it cool. You can then pretty much peel it with your fingers, and mash it up with a fork.
I'd give her a good big tablespoon full with each meal.
Ideally, she should be tested between the 10th & the 14th, since that would cover the giardia incubation period if you got her July 1st. But honestly, I think I might ask the vet for Panacur tomorrow, even without a positive fecal. There's no reason her stool should not be firm & well-formed all the time if she doesn't have a parasite, she's eating exactly what she did at the breeder's, and no new foods or treats have been introduced. Stress could cause loose stool for a day or two, but not this long.
My breeder feeds the puppies a mixture of pumpkin, plain yogurt, probiotic, and chicken broth once a day from the time they are 4 weeks old til 8 weeks old. I made this mixture and gave a little bit as a snack to Tenley when we brought him home, so that he would be eating something that he remembered (in addition to the Orijen kibble he had also been eating at the breeder). To this day he loves it. We still make it for him from time to time. Just put all that stuff in the nutribullet and mix it all up and it keeps for a day or two!
Careful with chicken broth; I have yet to find one that doesn't contain onions, and onions are toxic to dogs. It's dose dependent, so a small amount once in awhile doesn't hurt, but every day could cause Heinz-body anemia:
We always make our own, as did the breeder. Nothing but chicken and water then! Also no salt... which it is impossible to find on the grocery store shelves I have found!
Also, for what it's worth, I have always fed puppies chicken & rice for their first few days home to ease the transition. Done it for 5 puppies now and we haven't had one yet that got an upset tummy from the transition! We usually feed this for 2 days and start mixing in the normal kibble they were on at the breeder/shelter in the last meal of the second day.
I'm glad it's worked for you, but it really shouldn't be necessary for a healthy dog or puppy. They should be able to eat whatever they were eating before they came to live with you without a problem.
Simon, I think she will like the Origen. Yogi eats Origen, and she will race over to his bowl to try and get his, so once I can make the transition, she should be happy. Just hope she doesnt lose too much weight in the process.
