There is a LOT of info on here about dogs and bones.
I think I got it figured out but correct me if I'm wrong. I was at a friends house yesterday, she
Gave Yogi his first bone. I asked her of course if it was a femur bone, it was and it was raw.
Eating raw is okay, it's just messy, correct?
Am I correct in thinking that I can give him raw only occasionally, keeping in mind the high fat content?

So now it's day two, the marrow is partly gone (he's not too aggressive when eating it). I put it in the refrigerator last night. I'll give it back today. Once he's done with it today, is it a good idea to microwave or boil to get rid off any marrow left so it doesn't go rancid?

Is the marrow good for him, or just a treat I should give sparingly?

I like the idea of keeping them around for stuffing, that sounds fun. How long of a bone should I buy? As I mentioned he's not an aggressive chewer, 30#.

Thanks

I picked up a pack of soup bones from my farmer's market, but they are cut up with lots of meat on them. The farmer told me he gives them to his dog. I let her have one raw, but I don't like how the other pieces are cut. It looks like there are small bone pieces imbedded in meat. I may actually just make soup with them. :-) Still, they don't look anything like the round 'marrow' bones I picked up at the pet store. I will go and ask this week.

That sounds like knuckle bones, maybe.

I buy them at the grocery store or butcher shop as well.

Yes, we've had a lot of discussions here in TFG about marrow bones and how to prepare them. You really can't do it wrong; boil them, microwave them, whatever.

Let me post a link to our most informative discussion on this, lol. BRB.

And just for fun, Joanne's DH once got creative with all the indestructible marrow bones:

Now THAT is funny. I wish I'd kept all the past raw bones we gave Lexi and then tossed. If folks are needing smaller bones, you can buy these marrow bones at some pet stores. They aren't as cheap as a grocery store, but they aren't crazy expensive either.
