Quick question. I just switched over to Wellness Core Salmon Whitefish & Herring. Should I still be adding more Omega -3 supplements or is there enough in the food? Is there such a thing as "too much"?

PS. Bay is SUCH a picky finicky eater and she loves this food! No more TOTW

The CORE Ocean formula has a very good Omega 6:3 ratio, but due to the issues with Buzz's itchiness & skin issues, I'd still give him fish oil or evening primrose oil supplements. You can probably skip that with Bay if she doesn't have any skin issues. But it wouldn't hurt her, either. It's pretty hard to get too much.

Awesome! Thank you.

We give a Welactin pill to help with itchiness. It's a combination of Omegas...

But our puppy eats the Earthborn Holistic coastal catch, which has a large amount of Omega 6 and Omega 3, so we haven't really seen the same amount of itchiness since we switched to EArthborn Holistic and then ultimately to grain-free.

The Omegas in Welactin are the Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, found only in fish. In other words, fish oil, lol. It's a good supplement, but you get the same thing in the human fish oil soft gels for less $.

With the Omega 6 and Omega 3 content in dog food, it's the ratio that's important. Too much Omega 6 without enough Omega 3 actually contributes to inflammation and itchiness. The highest acceptable ratio is 5:1, and for any dog with itching or skin issues, it needs to be 3:1 or less. Earthborn's Coastal Catch has an Omega 6:3 ratio of less than 2:1, which is about as good as it gets. But the CORE formula Donna is using is less than 3:1, which is still very good.
