BB has had really great stools for the past 2 weeks. He's been on TOTW and Pumpkin diet for a week, and things are going great. Nice firm poops at good intervals.

It may be a silly question, but can we keep him on the Pumpkin indefinitely if its working for him? I know puppies in general have a tendancy for loose stools, and if he likes it, and we're willing to pay for it, is there a reason that he should go back to just dry kibble?

I ask because today for lunch we gave just kibble, and his stool just now was a bit wetter than normal (not much, just a tiny bit).

If the pumpkin is working, why take it away?

I'd love to know the answer to this question too! We don't feed pumpkin every day, but we feed it most days (once I have a can opened I just use it till we run out of it). Harper definitely likes it and it hasn't caused her to turn her nose up at her food on non-pumpkin meals, so I was also wondering if it was okay to keep feeding it to her for a long time. I just picked up two new cans this weekend. :)

Count me in for wondering too.

I took dollups of the open can...put them on Wax Paper & a Tray, Froze them.  Then put them in a zip lock bag in the freezer.  Works great.

I doubt that there's any harm in it, depending how much you're giving them, but there are pumpkin shortages every year. I don't think it's ever a good idea to depend on one particular food, whether it's kibble or anything else. What do you do when that one food you're depending upon is not available?

Past the first month in a new home, healthy puppies should not have a tendency to loose stools.

He's just rounding out month 1 of his time with us (how fast its gone!) Thanks for the information, too. I hear a lot about puppies and loose stools, but its nice to have a point of reference when its "not ok" anymore, and we need to figure out the cause of an underlying issue.

Stress can cause loose stools, and there is nothing more stressful than a young puppy being taken from his mother & littermates and moving to a strange place where nothing is familiar. But after two weeks or so, he should have adjusted.

There was time where I was making frozen yogurt/pumpkin treats for the doodles and we could try to give them one a day.  I don't think there's any harm in continuing to give pumpkin.

FYI if you're interested in going the frozen route (D&K seemed to like the coldness especially in the summer), I would mix 1:1 yogurt/pumpkin.  Then I'd put it in ice cube trays and freeze.  Then just pop them out and store in a freezer bag.  I think it should work exactly the same with straight pumpkin.
