I searched but did not find an answer. Although I have done this before, I forgot when I changed from 3 meals a day to 2 for Murphy. Bella is 5 months old, eats 3 meals a day. about 1 1/2 cups in AM, 1 cup at noon and 1/12 cups in PM. I add other foods to it, like yogurt, pumpkin, green beans, fruit, some meats at times. She eats eagerly and everything put in front of her. So what are the signs of going to 2 meals a day. If I wait for her to leave food at the morning or noon feeding I am thinking that is just not going to happen with her. She is 39 pounds now, gaining about 2-3 pds a week average as recommended. Anyone know the formula for when is the best time to change frequency of feeds?

I'm not sure what is the recommended, but we probably switched from 3 feedings to 2 feedings around a year old.
Gosh, I know I did it sooner than a year. That makes sense though as they are still on puppy food for one year at least. I am using Canidae ALS now and I have to go check the bag again to see what it says. I don't remember reading it on there tho.
I think we switched Buddy at around 4 months I know he has been having only 2 meals a day for quite some time and he will be a year old in 2 weeks.
I think by 4-6 months it's fine. Rosco would eat 10 meals a day at 4 years old so simply waiting for refusal of a meal may not be a useful sign to look for if Bella really likes to eat.
We switched around 3 or 4 months. She was wanting more food in morning and night - not in the middle. You could do it now!
It's tough to tell when they don't show any signs of not being interested in a meal here or there. But I'd say 5-6 months would be a pretty safe time to do it.
Yes, waiting for her to not finish a meal is probably unlikely here as I think the homecooked foods are just too tempting. Adina, Murphy would be right there with Rosco! At least 10 meals a day! How much are your guys getting of Canidae?
My breeder probably has a good answer if she is online today.
I jsut checked the bag. It says 6 months, to change to 2 times a day. And prior to that 3-4 times a day. She is getting the recommended amount of 4 cups a day. It says 2-4, but any less than 4 I think she would be hungry as she is very active all day with Murphy and the 3 days a week Marley comes over.
I can wait another month then as there's no hurry. I know she must need it as she is growing so fast. April had told me once that you rarely ever see an overweight puppy as they eat what they need. Just not sure if that same thinking applies when it comes to adding real foods. She seems to have picked up the habit of devouring her food just like Murphy always has. And she didn't start out doing that. Do they learn this from eachother? So odd. They act like someone is going to take it away or they haven't been fed in days. Strange.
