I buy from privately owned local pet supply boutiques, and from one chain, Pet Supplies Plus.
I will buy from the cheapest source. We were feeding Natural Balance and I always ordered from Petco online because it was cheaper, they deliver for free, I could get 5% back with the rewards program and frequent flyer miles (4 miles per dollar with AA)!
Now I'm shopping for new food. Once I've settled on something, I'll look at the online prices. If the pricing is the same, I'll probably try to support an independent local store.
A combination of local stores and online
For food, Eva eats Primal (frozen raw) so we buy from our local boutique or Whole Foods. The freeze-dried version we buy on Amazon.
For treats, we buy both at local boutique and online (mostly from Amazon since there are more varieties there, except for the antlers from Doggyloot.com)
Feed supply stores usually have a good selection of high quality foods. I buy Dakot's food from a chain called Incredibe Pets. They will price match anyone, the customer service is fantastic and they have two mega sales a year.
Food comes from a local pet shop (Personal Beast in Portland) and PetPros (which I believe is a chain in Oregon and Washington). So pretty much local pet shops.
We also have a local chain of grocery stores that carry food and treats- they have Zukes, Canidae, Solid Gold, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, among other choices. If I didn't feed Acana, yes, I could buy dog food from the grocery store!
Wow, I have never heard of a chain of grocery stores that sell any of our approved brands. What's the name?
New Seasons Market (awesome. Whole Foods-like, but better and cheaper!)
Yes, some of the specialty and/or organic grocery stores like Whole Foods do carry some good pet foods. Not what i consider your typical grocery store, lol.
I buy from a local specialty pet shop called Eastside Dog...their prices are comparable, they have a great selection, & the owner researches everything sold in her store to be sure the products are of the highest quality. I would feel confident buying anything in the store for that reason. Some of the dog food companies will offer a free bag after you buy 10...the store keeps track of it for you. Next time we need food, I'll be getting a $67 bag free.
