Each facility does volunteer applications different, but I can tell you that the two applications that I have in require not only the dogs to be certified but the handler has to have TB testing and classes before you ever begin visits.
My boys have visited retirement centers first because they seemed to be the least complicated with the red tape. We have done that until I felt comfortable and could gauge how my dogs will react to the situations: walkers, wheel chairs, patient excitement, and facility staff.
I have really had to find my way with little help, but it is a rewarding experience once you get started. Just like everything in life, baby steps, and one at a time.
Let me know if I can help you!
Congratulations! I have seen how dogs can revive a person back into life. Thank you for doing this, I know how much time and effort it must be to make time for it in your life. We are hoping to get Rosie into a program. She finished her class but is still a little jumpy and we are hoping she will mature a little more before we begin research of where we can go.
Does anyone know of facilities we can visit around Contra Costa down to Oakland areas? Thanks.
