Noah and I are meeting with the Paws For People (therapy organization based in DE, but also does some work in PA and NJ) director on Nov. 18 to take the STEX and CGC tests to see if he would be a good fit for therapy work. I'm very excited, but also a bit nervous because we haven't been in a formal training set-up in over 5 months. The good thing is that Noah doesn't pull on the leash, he's very friendly, doesn't startle easily, and responds to the basic commands (sit, down, stay, come, leave it) that they will be testing.
I've read through advice in this group and everyone seems to recommend exercising the dog before the test. I was thinking about taking him for a 30 minute walk. He's not really high energy, I'm just worried if he hasn't exercised at all that day that he might jump up to greet the director.
Relax yourself, exercise Noah & just reinforce your commands with Noah. Noah will give you the signs of what he is about to do. Generally you can tell if their ready to jump. It is okay to let the testers see that you need to use commands. I was so nervous with everything testing, visits etc., thinking I needed to bring this perfect animal...and what it comes down to is ......it is okay to let them see that you have a dog. As much as it seems that all therapy dogs are perfect....well trained never do anything wrong animals, they are still animals and just as people...not perfect. You will do great! Good luck.
