Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My 10mos old F1B Goldendoodle is always eating sticks. At times, I can't even walk him bc he is so preoccupied by them. He has vomited as a result1-2x but other than that and a little stomach upset once in a while, it doesn't seem to bother him. I know it can be dangerous. We live in a heavily wooded area so there is little I can do to avoid it. Any suggestions on how to get him to stop? thanks.

We had this problem! I found our solution in the petstages wooden stick. I started by swapping the real sticks for this one. And now he loves it so much he bypasses real sticks for his safe one. Maybe it will work for you! For us it was the best toy we've ever bought. He only gets it when he goes out and it keeps him happily occupied the entire time.

If you go for it make sure to get it from a reputable pet store. There are Petstages knock offs that are made in China. We had one and it made Spike really sick. The key is to look for Petstages written on the actual stick with the s on the end. Lesson learned here! FYI our tsc stores sell the knock offs.

Are you with him when he's eating the sticks?  I think for awhile I wouldn't trust him to be out without you while you train him what you want him to do instead of what he's currently doing.  I love Tracey & Spike's suggestion on the petstages wooden stick.  I would carry it with you and if he goes to pick up a "real stick" I would verbally correct, take it away, and trade him for the petstages stick.  You might order a couple of these, because I think you'll have to do it several times before he truly understands.  Keeping it only for when he goes out also makes perfect sense to me...it becomes a treat and a replacement for the behavior you're trying to avoid.

That's exactly what we did! Carried it around and offered up the trade. In fact I keep one in my purse for when we are out.
It serves a dual purpose for me. No sticks. And When he sees someone he loves and wants to greet.... Which is everyone..... I give it to him and he will not jump on them. No clue why. But he always looses his mind with joy and having the stick (or anything) in his mouth keeps the four on the floor. They he concentrates on tossing his head around showing off his treasure and rubbing on the people like a cat. I think my dood is weird.... Haha
These Petstages sticks sound exactly like what I need for Maddie. She always picks up a stick whenever we are on our way back home from a walk. I feel so bad when she wants to bring it inside with her to chew on it. Do these last for a while, or do they chew them up quickly?
They last a good while. He has his stick down to a palm sized nub from last summer and he still wants it. I've only ever had one dud. And as it turned out it was a knockoff.
