You know that 'plan b' I frequently reference? You may have additional premium options soon, more later I promise, but for those of you who have not heard my plan b speal here you go:
Ever since the 2007 recalls I have done many things differently. In fact I continue to refine this as many of your stories of loss have reached my ears and heart. I would never ever advocate remaining on the same food day in and day out. We literally change our food with every bag we open, around here that may mean a different formula every 2-3 days! When you are offering a premium kibble rarely do you have the stomach distress often seen with shall we say non premium kibble. For the most part we stay within the Champion line, both Orijen and ACANA (I have found that Orijen does seem better with serious eye stains and in the end resolves the problem rather than just erasing it ~ I have spent a fortune on such treatments). However recently it has become more apparent as trucks get held up by the FDA (and don't get me wrong they should but it floors me that they scrutinize companies such as these and let them put rancid restaurant grease, dying, diseased and decayed animals and toxic chemicals in our pets food in our own country!) that you should always have a plan B. Recall issues aside, what if your furkid suddenly becomes allergic to the chicken he has been eating for years (btw the chances for this increase the longer you remain on one food), but maybe now he has become finicky and doesn't want to eat anything else? What if the sourcing dries up or a crop is bad for a prime ingredient and there is a formula change? What if your furkid gets sick heaven forbid and you have no idea what you might woo him with because you have not experimented? If you only feed kibble, have you ever offered some of the alternatives just to test them out in the event the need ever arose? Between the recalls and the formula change that nobody knew about with Canidae I can assure you that I do not ever want to be in a position again where I do not know where I am going next.
As I indicated we primarily use Orijen and ACANA kibble, but here are some others we throw in a bag of every now and then: GO! & NOW! both by Petcurean (also of Canada), Fromm grain free formulas and EVO. If our dogs did not have grain issues, we would also use California Natural. We might do this every 3rd bag or so. On another note at one time I stated that Mulligan's Stew would be coming out with a kibble that I was very excited about, I have been unable to get a clear statement regarding the fish meal in that kibble and if it is free of ethoxyquin, because I do not have all of the information I need to make an informed decision I cannot support a recommendation at this time.
We have also introduced air dried, raw, freeze dried, canned and dry mixes that are to be combined with water, meat, etc...
You know me I cannot get my hands on enough info, so please keep sharing what your experiences are both good and bad, you have no idea how many people that may help in the future by you sharing.
