On the topic of preventatives I would love to hear about your approach. Are you using anything for flea/tic prevention? If so what and how do you rate the effectiveness? Heartworm prevention? Any others? If you are using something is it obtained from the vet? Maybe you have stumbled across a better source? I would also like to hear if you are using an alternative treatment.

Last on this topic I wish to add a safety warning that I do not think is widely known. Many parasite (to include fleas, ticks and many others) topical treatments use permethrin. This ingredient is in many over the counter products like shampoos and sprays. Many find themselves doodle owners because of asthma, allergies and other health concerns. For that reason it is especially important that you read labels and collect information. These products can carry additional concerns for people who have asthma and allergies to ragweed and can result in asthma-like symptoms, especially in children with a history of asthma or allergies. Besides asthma, other allergic respiratory responses to permethrin can include sneezing, asthma, sinusitis, and bronchitis. I am NOT saying don't use them, just be aware and please be careful. I have experienced an allergic reaction to this and it was frightening, though in all scenarios one must weigh the benefits and the risks and maybe develop an alternative plan like have someone else handle the needed chemicals for you.

Thanks for the interesting info on Permethrins.....I do have a son with allergies...so, a great warning!
We have been using Frontline and Interceptor from the beginning with both dogs with no adverse affects. Zeke may have had a minor problem when his Interceptor dose was increased because of weight. He was a little droopy and had loose stools for a day. As far as people involved, there have been no noticable problems. Thanks for the information though, I will be monitoring dogs and humans alike in the future.
We have discussed this in the past, but as we enter 'prime time' for fleas, ticks, etc...I have just come across these and wanted to share:
