Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi ALL!!

I'm new here so hopefully this post is in the right place. Our new puppy was born 9/1 (Labor Day). We are very lucky in that the breeder lives about 2 miles from us. We are going there to pick her out. We have pick of the litter for the 4 females. How do you choose? I've seen pics and they all look so cute. I know they will look different in a couple weeks when we go to pick her out but what should I be looking for? Color? Size? etc. Any tips

Thanks

Maggie

What kind of doodle are you getting? Labradoodle? Golendoodle? I thought about this decision long and hard as well.  I think that the color and coat are personal preference. The thing that is the biggest thing to consider is the temperament testing. The vollard testing is the one that you here about most. Most breeders will do this kind of testing around the 6 week mark. If you read up on this testing you will discover that different dogs are perfect for different kinds of families. Most people choose dogs that are the "middle of the road" puppies. Those that score mostly 3's and 4's on the temperament testing.

Do you know if your litter is an F1 or F1b litter or multigen? It has seemed that the F1's have a greater variety in coats. Typically the curlier the coat then the more poodle characteristic coat (less shedding). Shedding might be really important to you and then maybe again not.

They change so much in just the few shorts weeks.  Good luck.

Michelle,

She is a F2 goldendoodle multigen. I will look up the testing and see what that's about.

Thanks for the info!

I have pick of the litter born last week, F1B mini goldendoodles. I know I want a male, so I'll have to choose between 3 pups.

As of right now, they'll all have varying wavy coats, none of them have the crimping or curls in the coats. They are also all a deep red. Since all 3 will have the look I wanted, I'm going to go on personality & pick the one with the personality I want.

I'm hoping to do a lot of training, obedience, maybe even searching so I'm hoping one of the males has a more typical retriever personality. If so, that'll probably be my pick!

But it all depends on what you want, what you think will fit in with you!

Do you have pics yet?  It is so exciting wating for a new pup.

Here is the discussion! I'm thinking of the puppy that is facing the camera--he's speaking to me :)

Our puppy was born Monday, 9/30.  We are first pick male and trying to decide between a chocolate and an apricot.  We'd like to wait a few weeks and go out and pick in person - almost feeling a little bit of pressure to decide - they are asking if we could go out and pick this weekend.  I just don't think it's easy to pick on day three of being born.

Thoughts?  Isn't there a lot of change the first few weeks?  When do eyes open?  What other things take place/develop the first few weeks.  Do personalities start coming out in that time?

We don't know much about temperament tests - when we go, what things should we do/look for?

I can't believe they want you to pick from pups that are 3 days old. Their eyes aren't even open yet. It seems the breeder may be pushing you on a decision a little too soon. We aren't picking til next week when they are 5 weeks old.

I know.  We are going to go see the puppies at about week 3.  Hopefully will pick then.  It really boils down to color at this point -I guess we could pick sooner than usual...
