Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have a "goldendoodle" of uncertain parentage... allegedly she's an F1b (F1 x standard poodle), but everyone says they don't see any poodle in her and that she looks like a purebred golden retriever. Seems highly unlikely she'd have the straight hair she does if she were 75% poodle, no? I know the coats change a lot in the first year, but I'm wondering what your forecast is? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the owners were being honest with us and that I won't have a massive shedder come spring, but I'm not counting on it. (no shedding as yet, but I guess you wouldn't expect it at this age) I'm attaching a current photo of Milly (at almost 3 months) and one of her supposed mother (who was dark orange in person) and poodle father. The mother had coarse wavy hair. I even wonder how the coloring could come about if these are the true parents; the 3 pups I saw of this litter were all the same coloring as Milly. Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks!

Millie's coloring is not at all questionable if these are the parents. It's hard to tell exactly what the father's color is from the picture, but he appears to have dilute coloring, which is recessive; and of course, you don't know what colors he carries for, but at any rate, Millie's coloring is right in line with the color genetics that we can see in the parents.

Genes don't express themselves in terms of percentages, so it is entirely possible for the retriever genes to be expressed, even in a dog who is 75% poodle. Here's an example: I have a niece who has three grandparents with blue eyes and one grandparent with brown eyes. My niece's eyes are brown. :)

Thanks for your answer, very interesting! And good example with the blue eyes. :) So sounds like there is still a chance those were her true parents and we won't have a shedder on our hands... only time will tell I guess...

By the way, what is an "open face" exactly? I assume smooth hair vs hints of eyebrows and other tufts, and does it mean they won't develop the shaggy Benji face? Here's a recent picture of Milly, not the best photo, but can you tell if she's an open face?

An "open face" means that the dog does not have "furnishings", which are the beard, mustache, and shaggy eyebrows.

It does look like Milly has an open face. She's very pretty.

Don't most doodle puppies not have that yet though? Even if they have a curlier coat?

Even in the young puppies, there is usually a chrysanthemum shaped area of longer fluff around their muzzles and between their eyes.

Ah, okay. So I guess my Milly has none of that, right? I feel like I kind of see eyebrows and waviness on her head, but I suppose that's wishful thinking, maybe even golden retrievers have that?

You never know. They change a lot during their first year. :)
