I'm always looking for a good, reasonably priced red. I like lighter reds that are slightly tart, or acidic, as the sommelier would say. I hate the heavy ones that taste like ink to me.

I've had some wonderful wines in restaurants, only to find out that you can't buy them in a store; they're only available to the restaurants through distributors.

Here are some of my current favorites:

Folie a Deux Menage a Trois California Red Wine: This one is a blend and very inexpensive.

Cono Sur Pinot Noir: Chilean, I have no idea how it's priced, as I only had two glasses in a restaurant

I am very lucky to have a Coopershawk Restaurant and Winery very close to my house. I love this place!

My favorite Coopershawk reds are the Carignane, the Malbec, and the Lux Meritage. But they only have locations in Illinois and Indianapolis, so this doesn't help many of you. Okay, never mind Coopershawk.

I clearly need some more widely available selections. Please give us some suggestions.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I just think red wine is so pretty; there's something sensuous about it, lol. Especially when you drink it in a big balloon-y wine glass!

Karen,   Try Folie a Deux by Menage a Trois.  They make white and red wines and are fabulous.  I can buy this at the local fancy grocery store for 7-10.00.  Or, you can order it online.  I love the name and it's a great wine.  Cheers

LOL- that's one of the two I listed up at the beginning of the discussion. It was actually recommended to me by a French woman I know.

I usually pay about $12 for the red at the loal gorcery store.

Ooops.  I went from a post on the main page right to my recommendation and didn't read your intro.  I love the reds.  It seems to be less expensive here in North Carolina at the Harris Teeter!!
This sounds kinky.
Ha Ha, I was thinking the exact same thing "F".
I'm fortunate enough to live in Oregon Pinot Noir country--some fine reds come from around here!  Erath is an example that comes readily to mind.  And Sokol Blosser.  There's nothing wrong and a lot right about Jacob's Creek Cabernet (Australian, inexpensive--or cheap--depending on your wine budget.  :)

Hi Karen, we have found the Charles Shaw Wines to be fantastic ($2 Buck Chuck is what he has been dubbed). It is more like $3.50 a bottle here in OH and sold at Trader Joe's, do you have one of those IL? Our favorites are Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

I know it seems impossible but they really are very good. My first thought was I am sure it's awful but once I stopped being a snob about it and tried the Shiraz I was a convert.

Of course I am pretty cheap, I may have forced myself to like it - LOL
I actually like some really cheap white zinfandels...think Gallo, lol...so I'm sure there are cheap reds I'd like. And we do have Trader Joe's here, one right near my house, in fact.
So, I'm clueless.  Here's how I buy wine.  I look for the mid priced ones, and then I select by how pretty or unusual the bottle is.  For XMAS Eve I bought six bottles of different red wines... all based on how much I liked the bottle.  Some were really good, a couple were just too sweet.  Do you think I even remember which ones were good...nope.  No idea.  I'm going to have to start remembering (forget remembering....writing down) the ones I really like.
Oh, I guess I should add that DH and I did not drink the six bottles of wine by ourselves.  We had lots of family here "helping us".

One of our favorites is RED from St. Francis (Sonoma, CA).  DH and I went to Sonoma and that was our fave winery.  Of course we didn't taste Red there, but found it at home - it's just a nice, even blend.  About $12.
