I am from the UK but live in Canada. My Mum is visitong so we are doing touristy things. we have done all the typical touristy things in past visits, so this time, we have mostly been out hiking seeing the local scenery (with Cooper of course!)

Yesterday, we stumbled upon a fruit winery - on subsequent research online we have found that the Lower Mainland (around Vancouver) has lots of vinyards, many of which make fruit wine.

So, we bought a blueberry wine, a white cranberry wine, and a red cranberry wine. The blueberry wine is to go with dinner tonight.... I will let you know what we think of it.

Anyone else have any experience with fruit wines?

I've liked some of the fruit wines at a local winery near my home, Coopershawk. I had a cranberry wine there last fall that was very good. And they're a good choice for people who don't really like the taste of alcohol. They're much more juice-like, for lack of a better word.

But they're usually pretty sweet. Better for sipping on their own, or with dessert, than with a meal, I think.

surprisingly, this wine wasnt too sweet as we expected it to be, very nice :)

I have tried the cranberry/blueberry wine from a small winery in Bala in Northern Ontario - it was very nice - not sweet at all.  I would definitely buy it again - a bit pricey but well worth it.  We had it with Thanksgiving dinner last year.

My favourite white wine is Le Piat d'Or (french wine) however I have found a cheaper white wine that I like almost as much - the brand name is French Cross.

I have a bottle of Leelanau Cellars (from Northern Michigan) on my counter, blueberry flavor, it was a gift from my SIL. Have not tried it yet but I had cranberry over the holidays and loved it. Just waiting for the right meal to try it with, maybe steak.

The cranberry was NOT sweet, I hope the blueberry is the same, not a fan of sweet wines.

I am a big fan of fruit wines, Ohio seems to have quite a few of them.  My favorite is from a local winery called Breitenbach - the winery itself is really neat to, very relaxing if you have a chance to visit it, its in Amish Country in OH (not a fan of Amish Country) BUT I think that is more for just advertising because the people that own it are not Amish and no one that works there appears to be Amish.  They have lots of neat bands outdoors in the summer and a great patio area. My favorites are peach, raspberry and cherry, they also have elderberry, black raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, just a ton.  The only one I really did not like was dandelion.  They have an online store on their website that you can order from - its definitely worth trying and they are not expensive wines at all.  The do have an ice wine that is pretty pricey but wonderful!    www.breitenbachwine.com
