Caryn, We are so sad to hear of Sophie's premature passing at such a young age.
I called my dau-in-law that has had three guide dogs and asked her about poodles being used for guide dogs. I knew she inquired about them because the family wanted her to get a dog that didn't shed as much as her labs. This is what she told me: "The two top guide dog organizations (Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafeal and Seeing Eye in New Jersey) tried using the poodles but too many of them were failing in graduation and health issues. In Columbus, Ohio they are training poodles as guide dogs."
I know you said you weren't ready for a 'guide' dog yet, but I thought it wouldn't hurt for you to start looking into all the possibilities.
P.S. they make great service dogs. That's what they were originally bred to do. There used to be a place in Texas that trained Labradoodles for that role... Otherwise there are independent service dog trainers around all over. If you google it.... you will find a lot of information to get you educated.
Caryn. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Sophie. My heart ached when I read your email. I can't imagine losing a doodle(of course any dog) so young...If it helps you, I can't say enough good things about Lulu's breeder Adam Ford at Mt. Saint Blas Labradoodles in Woodland Hills...(SanFernando Valley). He breeds the most amazing Australian Labradoodles and really knows what he is doing. The pups are brought up in his home and the love shows. Good luck and I hope you can find some comfort in a new little bundle of doodle! Best, Sylvie Tabori
Caryn, My heart aches for you and your loss. I cannot imagine losing a pet at such a young age; you must still be in shock. Sophie looks so much like my Bosco - we got him through Cactus Flower Labradoodles in Tucson, AZ. The breeder, Linda Grim, is a gem to work with. (((((((hugs)))))) to you. I'm sure you made Sophie's time here as happy and joyous as it ever could have been; she was blessed.
Caryn, I am so very sorry to hear that your beautiful Sophie passed away. I can't help you with suggestions regarding getting a doodle to be trained for a service dog, but I hope others can. I just wanted to offer my condolences.
