Just a Dog

I just wanted to share something I received recently in an email.

I love the idea of training him to do therapy work. I bet you two will enjoy it more than you can even imagine. I haven't done any therapy dog training with my Mazie (goldendoodle, 21 months) yet, but am hoping to in the future. My last dog, a standard poodle named Kira, was an unofficial therapy dog. She wasn't certified, but was very well-behaved, so I was able to bring her to visit my grandmother in her assisted living home and ultimately the adjacent nursing home when she became quite ill. It was a lovefest! My grandmother had always had dogs, so she was just thrilled anytime I could bring Kira to visit. Then I noticed the other residents were really responding to Kira and she to them. It was just so wonderful to watch little old ladies (and a couple of gentlemen) just brighten right up and smile and reach for Kira. She would wag her tail and patiently wait for a stiff or crooked or gnarled hand to reach out and pet her, however clumsily..She seemed to know that old people are delicate. She was so gentle and patient with them. One lady always wanted to give her treats - lemon drops that she carried in her pocket. Obviously that's a no - so I started bringing biscuits with me for the residents to feed to her. It brings tears to my eyes just to think of how happy these lovely elders were to be able to visit with Kira. It was absolutely as much a gift to me as it was for them. I'm crossing my fingers, hoping that my big goofball, Mazie, will take to therapy work. She loves EVERYBODY, so that's good, I've just got to find a way to tone down some of her more rambunctious behavior before I sic her on the elderly or infirm!
Rocky is so sweet. I sure hope that his paw is better very very soon!
