It's hard to believe it has been almost a year ago since we had this surgery done on Remington. Over that past year I have been contacted by people all over the world (seriously) about giving them advice on what they should do concerning their own dogs. I have also been overwhelmed with responses from people on DoodleKisses wondering how Remington is doing now, telling me they think of us often, and wondering what life is like for us now. It is so nice to feel so loved by people you have…
Remington may be 3 years old and 80 lbs... but he's still a puppy to us and shows this side of himself during play time. We usually take him to the school by our house to play in the big open area over there. We bring his kong Frisbee and all is right with the world :)…
Throughout Remington's surgery and recovery I have learned so much. Never in a million years did I think this process would have taught me so many things!
1) Remington is absolutely fine without Dan and I and adjusts quite well to situations. I have always been one of those people who just could NOT stand to board my dog. I was always so worried that he wouldn't be okay, that he would be scared, or that something bad would happen to him. We would do anything in our power to… Continue
OMG... Remington got sick for the first time after his surgery and I cannot even tell you how gross it was! I have never seen his puke look like it did or had as much trouble cleaning it up! I seriously thought that I was going to have a stain on my carpet. Several rounds of Resolve and 20 minutes later I got the spot out. I sure didn't expect to deal with that on Day 12... Day 4 or 5 maybe, but Day 12... no! I'm not sure why it was so bad, maybe it was some of the… Continue
Every day keeps getting better and better. We are finally seeing a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Remington is having regular bowel movements now for the most part. He is not having normal size ones, but I'm hoping that will come with time and they will get better when we change back to his regular food and are done with this soft stuff. I definitely do not like canned food!
The razor burns are 10 times better than what they were. Both… Continue
Things are slowly but surely getting better for Remington. He had only been having like 1-2 inch poos, but this morning he had a nice normal 6 inch one. (Sorry if I gross you out with his bowel movement updates, but they are important!) We have been letting him be without his cone when he is on the bed with us, but when we are sleeping or any other time the cone stays on. He seems to enjoy the moments that he is cone free! He still is not drinking water… Continue
Things are much better today than any of the days before! YAY! I finally think we have made it past the worst part! Remington pooped for the second time this morning! Sooooo HAPPY! Hopefully he can get back on his normal schedule soon. He is still having trouble with his walking... probably from the burns on his bum that are still healing, but for the most part he is doing great.
We did have a little oops moment this morning. Dan was taking Remington out to potty and of course… Continue
8:00 am Things took a bit of a turn for the worse last night. Not only is this going on day 4 with no poop... Remington is no longer peeing. I'm freaking out. I have cried so much in the past four days you wouldn't think I would have any tears left. I'm fairly strong during the time when I'm with Remington by myself (only because I have to be) but when Dan gets home from work that is when the crocodile tears start coming and they don't stop... We made an appointment with our… Continue
This has been the most horrible day since the surgery! I have been pretty much hysterically crying non stop since 10 o'clock last night. It is even harder because I'm dealing with Remington mostly by myself because of Dan's schedule at the moment. That is the worst part. I'll be so ready for Tuesday when he'll be off for a few days.
So... Remington is a completely different dog today compared to yesterday. I think the reason is because they were giving him injectable pain meds… Continue
Just a warning, some of the pictures included in this post are not pretty so don't look if you get grossed out easily.
Just as promised I'm going to keep documenting Remington's recovery so others that have to have this surgery done can have a better idea what to expect, since it was extremely difficult to find anything on the subject during the time that I was researching this.
We picked up Remington this morning at 9:00. I think… Continue
Friday, May 20, 2011 - Morning Update Received a call from Brandy this morning at around 9:30. She informed me that Remington is still in a lot of pain, but that he is raising his tail a little bit today, which means he is feeling a little more comfortable. She told me that yesterday evening after surgery he did have a bowel movement in his kennel and he got it all over himself, but she cleaned him up the best she could and he is scheduled for a bath later this… Continue
Remington went in for surgery today (Thursday) at 11:30 in the morning. I got a call from the vet doing the surgery at a little after 2:00 in the afternoon saying that they had just finished up, so he must have went in later than expected. The surgeon said that everything went very smoothly. They were able to remove both anal glands with no problems. They did have a little more bleeding than expected, but nothing to worry about. This is a huge weight off our shoulders! I feel like I can… Continue
Remington's surgery for today has been moved until tomorrow in the afternoon. They got too far behind on the schedule so they had to move it. He was fed a half a can of food and gobbled it up. I am upset... but I guess I would rather them take their time and do it right than rush through it and mess something up.
It's been a long day... where do I even begin. I suppose 5:30 in the morning is best...
I was up at the crack of dawn because first I couldn't sleep and second I had a horrible upset stomach... if you get my drift. Even typing this now, makes my stomach do back flips. Of course, once I was up that meant Remington was up and ready for breakfast. Dan then got up and took him to… Continue
We are heading to Purdue bright and early tomorrow morning for Remington's consultation with the soft tissue specialists at Purdue. As you probably already know, I'm a complete mess. I have 2 full pages of questions to ask when I get there. We have been busy getting his food together, picking out a toy for his stay, and figuring out directions to the clinic. I'm soooo nervous and my stomach is FULL of butterflies.
Here's what will happen in the next couple of days...…
Here is the most recent update on Remington's surgery...
I contacted Purdue's Small Animal Clinic on Friday. After getting a referral from our current vet they were more than happy to speak with me about the surgery. They have several vets in house that specialize in soft tissue surgeries. The type of surgery that we are discussing doing with Remington is something that their surgeons are very familiar with and do on a routine basis. What would happen is we would bring him in…
Today we celebrated Remington Bear's Birthday! My little boy turned 2 years old today! Can you believe it! He is growing up so fast! We had a pretty quite celebration since Dan had to work tonight. He needed to get some sleep before he went in, so we didn't have any wild parties like last year! Here is how Remington's day went...…
