Back in December Monty rocked his CGC graduation class, Monty received an A, his trainer (me) received a C.  Because Monty loved going I signed him up for the next level.  Well Jan/Feb I should have time and/or the wherewithal to train my dog.  Not.  It has not been a good month for me, did not train my dog outside of the classroom instruction time, the weather, it was dark, it was cold..........  We went to class last evening for the test.  I went there knowing that Monty was not ready, actually he had transgressed from some of the stuff we learned in CGC.  The instructor asked me what we trained or practiced the week before. I put my head low and confessed we had done nothing to ready for the test,  She was a little surprised, but tried to reassure me that dogs sometimes know when it is time to show themselves.  Well sure, if you actually train them. So.....I tried to get Monty in the zone. He really wants to play with the other dogs, very hard to get his attention.  So the practice and testing started, I was really trying to get Monty to pay attention.  The recall, I took him to the opposite side of the room.. He was doing his sit/stay until I went to the other side and turned toward him, before I would call him, he would rocket across the room to his mom.  He of course did this last night, I drug him back and and requested again.  this time he waited for the minute,  when the instructor said"ok call your dog" Monty looked directly at the trainer and then he looked at me as if to ask "really is it ok now:"?  Anyway after calling him the second time, he rocketed across the room to me for a sit.  It put the whole room into a crazy state.  OMG Well the real kicker..........Monty passed his level!   Out of 6 dogs, only two of us passed.  I was more shocked than anyone in the room.  This dog rocks my world, I am sure that he is actually anticipating the next move, knowing who it comes from.   Its not me, Its THE DOG.

How funny. My Monty passed the CGC test in December. I was like you: going to the test knowing that there is no way he would pass since the trainer (me) did not spend time working on the commands. We all know how stubborn doodles can be....they know exaclty what "come" command means, they just have selective hearing occasionally. Well, the long story short, Monty passed the test. Just like you wrote: sometimes dogs know when important people are watching and it's time to show off. I know my Monty and I know that he is a player. He just downright tricked the evaluator lady into believing he is a well mannered dog. She even praised him saying Monty is better behaved at his 9 months than some older dogs she's seen. That little stinker! I know my own truth....

In any case, congratulations to your Monty. :-)

The school calls it Level 1 Obedience Training. I believe they have three levels.
