8 weeks old. Discovered cold fusion AND solved the healthcare debate...then took a nap.

Sookie the Genius Dog is now 8 weeks old and doing fabulously well. Her favorite things are hot dogs (we use tiny bits for training), toilet paper tubes, the cats, and ice cubes. Potty training is going swimmingly: not a single #2 in the house since we got her, and she now heads downstairs to wait by the door every time the urge strikes. Crate training is also moving along. There is much less whining at night, only when she needs to go out...which she still does 3-4 times per night. When did your puppies sleep through the night?

At first we were afraid she wasn't food motivated, but it turned out to be just the new home jitters. Sookie will do ANYTHING for a bit of hot dog, and as such has now learned Sit, Down, and Shake, and performs them like a pro with or without treats present. This week we will work on Up (which she is sort of getting already). I want to teach her Speak, but she hardly ever barks so it's hard to find a reliable trigger I can use to teach the command!

On Saturday, we took her to The Puppy Playhouse in hopes of attending puppy preschool, but no other puppies showed up! The owner and trainer, Cindy Bruckhart, met with us for 45 minutes instead to see how Sookie was doing and talk to us about training. She is amazing. She's good friends with Ian Dunbar, the guy that wrote the puppy manuals that I have often seen linked on DoodleKisses, and is also friends with Victoria Stillwell! We love It's Me or the Dog and were mightily impressed. Anyway, Cindy is a contributor to Dog Star Daily, an excellent training blog, and we really liked everything she had to say. We will be starting puppy kindergarten with her on the 26th for 7 weeks.

We had some good quality socialization time with friends and their dogs this weekend. Sookie did SO well -- she loves people, especially children. She wants to play with all the dogs, but they're not always so gung ho. She respects their wishes when they let her know -- but I'm excited for her to get to interact with other puppies at kindergarten.

She seems to be growing by the minute, and getting fluffier with rapidity too! Here's a couple of pictures of her with her squeaky skunk right after her bath today. Clearly, she's plotting world domination. I for one welcome our fluffy puppy overlords and have a few suggestions as to who should be up against the wall first when the revolution comes.

Oh my gosh! Look at how big she's gotten already!

We're picking up her sister in roughly 95 hours, 45 minutes and 9 seconds - give or take - so we'll have to get the girls together soon!!! I know that she's going to miss Ellie and Rudy terribly, so seeing Sookie will make her little puppy heart glad, I'm sure!

We got our puppy at 9 1/2 weeks old and she slept through the night from the first night, maybe 30 seconds-2 min. of whining, or none at all for the past 11 nights. I think it just depends on the dog. Sookie is a cutie, that's for sure!
