Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I have had this blog written for a long time, but I did not want people to think Fudge was sick now. This happened shortly after we brought her home and goes to show that having a sick dog/puppy can be very scary. Since we have lots of new puppy owners, I thought it would be fun to share.
When Fudge was pretty small, she got sick. She stopped eating and drinking, was very lethargic, and I was beyond worried. Now, we all know if a child or puppy is going to get really sick, most of the time it happens after the doctor’s office has closed or on the weekend. Fudge was no exception. The more she wouldn’t eat or drink, the more upset I became and some would say, irrational. I was convinced Fudge was dying and my kids could not believe how I was acting. They will tell you I never coddled them as kids or got too worked up when they were not feeling well. I kept telling everyone we needed to go to the emergency Vet with Fudge before it was too late. My husband was not overly concerned and said she probably had a bug and we should just wait it out. WAIT IT OUT……when my baby was at death’s door? My youngest daughter insisted on reminding me that I had never acted very worried when she was sick and went on to tell her dad that the last time she asked me to feel her head to see if she had a fever, I said, “What do I look like, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman?” I told her we needed to focus on our Fudge right now, and we could take a trip down memory lane another day.
Everyone thought we should wait, except me, so off we went to the after hours Vet clinic. We filled out the paperwork and when we went back to our room I told them that Fudge had gotten into my purse and I had found an empty gum wrapper. Bingo….now someone was taking me seriously. Sugar free gum can be very dangerous for a puppy, so they proceeded to run all kinds of tests, to rule out every possibility. We waited for a bit and when the vet called us back to discuss the results, she had good news and bad news for us. The good news was that Fudge’s tests all came back normal and she probably just had a stomach bug. The bad news was that information cost us around $700.00. As we left the office, my husband said, “Basically, we just got a $700 gas bill.”
How Could I Take a Chance with this Sweet Puppy??

F, I agree. I just remember it as being something fun to do with my dad :) He loved to mushroom hunt and would just pull his car along side the road and start hunting...LOL!!
Good Laurie, I think the supermarket is much safer re: mushrooms.
Jennifer, Why can't people throw their gum where it belongs? Losers....I say :) Thank you!
Deanna, OMD...your $2000 makes my $700 seem like peanuts :) The things we do for our pets.
Kimmy, Thank you!!
Ricki, That is exactly what I told my DH :)
Thanks, Doris.
F, My dad used to love to go mushroom hunting. I used to go with him, but I don't even remember what to look for now or what time of year is best. I never liked them.
Nancy, Yes, it is time my DD faced the facts....LOL!!
I'm right there with you Laurie! You did good! Welcome to the puppy world right? A lot of people spit their gum out on the sidewalk/parking lot and Chloe likes ABC gum! She's had a hold of a few already and we managed to pry it out of her mouth ( I read that it is very bad so I was determined) Gross as it was picking someone else's ABC gum out, I would worry to death if she ate it. Glad Fudge was ok!
I think we've all been there at least a time or two - that late night or weekend trip to the after-hours vet or the ER (for our two-legged kids). A lot of times, it turns out to be something fairly mild, but the one time it IS a big deal more than makes up for those times.
Years ago, we had a cat that got sick - on the weekend. Off to the emergency vet. He had a urinary tract blockage. During the catheterization, he went into cardiac arrest. They got his heart going again (I'm picturing a crash cart with little bitty paddles - CLEAR). After a couple of days there and an over $2000 bill they sent him home.
Young Fudge is sooo cute!
So happy to know there are many hypercondriac doodlemons out there :) Fortunately, our vet office is open 24 hours and is only 5 mins drive away so I've been there at all kinds of hours. They even have a special room where owners can stay overnight with their dogs if they have to be admitted as inpatient. And yes, I've stayed there before when my previous dog became ill.
Laurie, you'll get no argument from me! You did the right thing! Puppies can go down hill very fast. Always better to be safe! Little Fudge is just adorable!!
So Donna, did you take the tonsils out : ) Mushrooms can be very scary and it is lucky, if that's what Quincy got into, that he got better on his own. I know it's kind of silly, but I don't even give my doodles regular mushrooms if I'm giving them a human topping treat. I don't want them to develop a taste for them outside : )
Love this, Laurie.!
Tell your daughter that since she could talk, whine, and complain an emergency dr. visit wasn't called for, but your precious Fudge couldn't tell you what hurt, so of course, an emergency room visit was necessary.
