An Annual Event on Newfoundland Shores

Every year at the end of June or early in July the annual Rolling of the Capelin begins. This is a cause for much excitement and lots of fun.Capelin are small fish that come to our beaches every year to spawn, it can be difficult to accurately predict their arrival which is why we make many trips to Middle Cove to seek signs of their arrival, lucky for us it's only a 5 mins drive. Lots of people take to the beach to see the spectacle and for a free meal of this delicious little fish.
We love to go, not only for the fish but also for the entertainment and to chuckle at the folks who are willing to brave the cold atlantic water to get their share of the Capelin.

Here is a little video I did earlier this week, not too many people but this was the third day of the rolling so most folks had already gotten their bounty. It is so much fun to watch the little kids excited and having so much fun.

My favorite thing about the Rolling of the Capelin is that once the Capelin arrive the whales are never far behind and whale watching is my favorite part of summer.

LoL, no we don't have any of those, he is quite something. Caplin is actually the Newfoundland spelling for capelin, I actually spelled it caplin in the title of the video.

Went to get you a link and the spelling is different.

You are online now.   See if you can see, what I saw, after I watched your video.

The next video was a GIANT Hog looking thing named Capelin.  Adorable.  He played on Little Tykes toys, wore a silly head band and ate Blueberry Yogurt.   I just wonder if he was named after your Capelin  (sp).  Do you have pets such as these, non-doodle looking creatures in your area?

Thanks Joanne, I found some whales but they weren't being cooperative in having their picture taken. I will keep trying.

You must be Whale Watching today.  Fun video.  Always love looking at scenery in the background of you video/pictures also.

@Nicky, Ireland and Newfoundland do have a lot in common, we even share some of the Irish brogue. If I am lucky enough to get some video, I will share it. I have lived near water all my life and don't think I would ever change that.

@Lucy and Sophie's Mom, you are a wise woman.

Please video and  post if you see the Whales.  I absolutely love watching anything to do with the sea. Of course we are surrounded by beautiful beaches and scenery here and that is why I love Ireland.  I could never live too far from the coast.

Amazing video clips.  It really felt like I was there.  You could try using Vimeo which is what I switched to from You Tube as it took too long. Normally it takes about ten minutes or so but if you subscribe which is pretty cheap it's immediate and the embedding code is very easy to copy.

I was going to say it looks like the smelt run that occurs in Duluth on Lake Superior at the mouth of the Lester River....then I saw your post that said they are like smelt.  Looks fun!

Oh wow, I think I want to live here (but only in the summer).  Not because of the fish, as I'm not really a fish eater, but because of the water and the scenery and of course because of Quincy.  Looks like lots of fun.
