Another Person on DK Checked Off my Poop Bag List! I met DJ (of DJ and Chance)!

Not long ago, Cheryl (and Finnegan) asked me if I would be interested in meeting DJ (and Chance), who was coming into Philadelphia.  Since I love meeting DK members and Cheryl, DJ, and I all started with Camilla’s photography classes at the same time and developed a bit of camaraderie, I was thrilled to accept the offer.  I mean, who wouldn’t want to meet the mysterious DJ?  I have long wondered about her initials and whether or not DJ was running from the law, leading some sort of double life, or was some famous celebrity hiding from the paparazzi, and here was my chance to get the answers for all of us.  I was almost sure DJ was someone famous and I didn’t have much to go on other than I knew she was a woman, lived on the west coast, loved dogs, and her initials were DJ.  I searched high and low for celebrities with the same initials and other than Derek Jeter and Don Johnson, my search turned up little.  So I decided to ignore the J, for now, and concentrate on the D and when I did that everything fell into place. Thank goodness for my sleuthing abilities because with some skillful questioning on my part, she was like putty in my hands and do I have the scoop.

First off, I played it cool when I met her and said, “nice to meet you, Doris.”  I could tell by the look of surprise on her face that I had nailed it. Oh, she tried to recover quickly and she had dyed her hair to throw me off, but behind those sunglasses, I could see those eyes that stared back at Rock Hudson in all those romantic comedies. Yes, my search turned up the one name that made perfect sense…Doris Day…and I think my evidence will prove my case.  For those of you who are saying that makes no sense because her initials are DJ, well upon further investigation, I found out her first husband’s name was Al Jorden and the rest, as they say, is history.  Many divorced women keep their married name and I am sure DJ, aka Doris Jorden, continued using that name to further protect her privacy.  If that is not enough for some of you, keep in mind that Hedda Hopper once interviewed her after Pillow Talk was released and asked if there was a romance brewing between her and her co-star, Rock Hudson, and Doris said, “I think there is a strong chance I may not be his type.”  DJ’s dog is named Chance.

Now, before F pipes in that Doris Day is 92 and DJ doesn’t look 92, remember she is a Hollywood gal and most of those dames have their Plastic Surgeon on speed dial and get Botox treatments as needed. I refuse to be dissuaded from my theory and reasoning with me will not work.  Just look at the pictures below and how DJ kept trying to disguise/hide herself and we all know Doris Day has been a recluse for years. Case closed and solved. Just remember, Doris Jorden, you may be able to hide from the paparazzi, but you can’t hide from Laurie, Fudge, and Vern.

No sense in beating a dead horse, so let’s get back to our meeting.  Cheryl had orchestrated the meeting and sent us maps to the college where we were meeting up.  I arrived first and since I forgot my magnifying glass, could not read the map, printed in the world’s smallest type and opted to send text messages asking for help to Cheryl.  I found out Cheryl is a lot like my daughters with texting and answering her phone.  I could just picture her seeing my frantic messages come through and saying to herself, “what does she want now?” and tossing her phone aside.  Luckily for me, I am no stranger to the “let’s ditch Laurie in a strange town” trick and I persevered by asking several strangers how to get to the Cloisters, which I was starting to think did not exist.  Who knew you had to go into a library building, down the steps, around a series of hallways, and take a chance and open a door and hope for the best. Note to self: Cheryl does not select the meeting places in the future.  Finally, after waiting for a bit, the door opened and there they were…Cheryl and DJ…and it was, once again, like meeting old friends….and I say old as in dear and not referring to Doris Day Jorden, aka DJ, being 92.

We had a great time looking around the campus for the arboretum, which DJ said she had been in earlier, but after taking us on a wild goose walk, I was starting to think we were going to have to go back to the library building, down the steps, through hallways, and try another door.  We never did find the arboretum, but we did find a couple of logs, a patch of wildflowers, and a tree stump filled with miscellaneous fungus/fungi/something ugly. DJ was completely enamored with the tree stump and I kept saying, “where’s a Doodle?” Cheryl was having fun taking shots of us looking into the tree stump and capturing us playing, “how many DK photographers does it take to get a picture of something gross in a tree stump?” I think the correct answer was two, because I don’t remember Cheryl taking any of those shots.  The only reason I can explain for copying DJ, who was the obvious leader of the tree stump shot, was because I was hoping she would post her picture in the Photography Group and then I could trump her with mine and Camilla would scream, “Oh my heck, this is the awesomest shot EVER!” and everyone else, except F who hates that word, would scream, “Laurie, if there was a calendar for eukaryotic organisms of the kingdom Fungi, yours would win.” I don’t know what any of that means…I had to look it up…but I do know when I won I would shout from the rooftops, “YES, YES, YES. OH YES!” until both Cheryl and DJ said, “I’ll shoot what she’s shooting.” Unfortunately, when I got home, I lost my competitive drive and decided I didn’t want any of the pictures in the first place, so there won’t be any organism moments for me, just for DJ and Cheryl, if she managed to sneak in some fungi photos.

OK, where was I? Next, we decided to take a group shot with Cheryl operating the timer on her camera and using the tree stump as a tripod.  Because we are all advanced members of the Photography group, it only took 6 “is the timer on?”, 5 “did you push the damn button?” 4 “I think I see it blinking” and 1 “Cheryl, make your camera work or you are going into the tree stump,” before we got the picture to take. Since I am so much taller than the other two and didn’t think advanced members should be taking pictures showcasing my chest and the other’s heads, I opted to kneel in the back of the log, even though I was concerned about a snake slithering out to see what all the fuss was about. When I stood up, my knees were green and wrinkled, and please no jokes that they were wrinkled before I knelt down.  I really do not think it bothered DJ that my large head was peering over her shoulder the entire time Cheryl was fussing with her camera.

The best part of DK is that it allows you to meet people from all walks of life and feel as if you have known them forever. The second best part is I get to write a blog about it and embellish all I want.  Despite DJ being a famous celebrity, there were no awkward moments of silence….we just all hit it off and had a wonderful day.  After we left Bryn Mawr College, we went to dinner, and followed that with another impromptu photo shoot when Cheryl dropped me off back at my car.  I also introduced them to Flat Laurie II.  We had a lot of laughs and I sure hope we can do it all again.

This was my first piece of evidence I uncovered showing Doris with Chance in a promo shot.

Then I found this picture on the Internet:

How many ways can DJ avoid having her picture taken?

and in case you are wondering about her hair color, this picture proves Doris Day was once a brunette.

Now she is using Flat Laurie as a shield

Remember how we used to have to balance a book on our head for good posture.....well, DJ had to practice to keep her funny hats on for more promo shots!

Tell me we are not looking at the same person.....

Case Closed!

Now, More pictures!!

This was snapped right after we told Cheryl we were stuffing her in that log if she didn't get her timer to work :)
